I’ve been playing golf badly for 20 years. I’m pretty rubbish. You don’t want me on your team. My 20 years experience is not a reason to recruit me. I have a love hate relationship with the game. However, you do want the young lad who was in the next bay along at the driving range a while ago, he smashes every ball straight down the middle of the range. I asked him how long he’d been playing - only a few years, he said he loves it. Experience is valuable. But the number of years you’ve been doing something is arguably less so. What you’ve achieved in that time, the reason you believe in your profession so much, the reason it gives you energy… these are far more powerful. Something for job seekers to think about when creating your Candidate Value Proposition - consider how you differentiate. What happens if your fellow interviewee has a few years experience on you?! Often employers tell us they struggle to find young people to fill their roles. And in 2023 only 13% of young people told us that they felt confident that they could find a good job where they live. It will be interesting to see how this figure has changed as we analyse this years #YouthVoiceCensus We talk to lots of employers about this disconnect. Sometimes it is down to how cluttered the job market is, perceptions of the role/company or long held stereotypes, the role description and candidate expectations and many other factors. We are now of course facing rising economic inactivity challenges and have NEET rates at the highest levels in more than a decade, all contributing to workforce development challenges. Youth Employment UK is able to provide our Members with lots of different insight, strategies and case studies from other Members to help navigate these issues.
