Street harassment is a common phenomenon that many public-transit riders, but especially women and girls, experience on buses and trains, in stations and at bus stops, as they travel between their homes, jobs, schools, events, and recreational activities. A 2022 law directed the MTI to create a survey to help public-transportation systems collect data on riders’ safety concerns. A second law passed in 2023 requires the state’s ten largest public-transit agencies to collect data from passengers about harassment, and make the findings public by the end of 2024. Should ‘jaywalking’ be legal? This has been quite a sensitive issue with varying strong arguments on both sides of the divide. We can all agree that government at all levels have a responsibility to protect lives of citizens (of which safety of pedestrian is one). However, it’s a fine line between enforcing pedestrian safety and creating a perception that discourages, one of the most sustainable and perhaps the oldest form of transportation, ‘walking’. Unlike many US cities, the UK doesn’t have specific law against jaywalking. So you couldn’t be fine and arrested for crossing the road at an undesignated crossing point. In fact, London has gotten rid of almost, if not all, the pedestrian guardrails on its streets. And the argument was that human beings are not animals that must be protected from jumping to the roads. Because if that were to be case, we would all be walking the streets on a leash. So it’s great to see the City of New York taking a progressive step to legalise jaywalking. Even though some of the argument to support the legalisation bothers on racial equality, I believe the decision serves a greater interest beyond racial equality. It will encourage more walking as a sustainable mode of travel amongst New York residents. #Walking #NewYork #SustainableTransport

What fact is most persuasive in communities across California learning to reform their traffic policies? White people are *not* safer when police waste resources pulling over people who look Black and brown. Yep, that argument has a lot of issues. But it works when I talk to white audiences, and the result is far fewer stops, searches, arrests, and use of force against people of color. We must stop traumatizing everyone to make white people "feel" safer. We can't let politicians use fearmongering as a wedge issue, but it is difficult as small, fragmented, poorly resourced advocates to challenge professionally crafted "tough on crime" messaging. Rhetoric about "other" people who are not like us has always been powerful. So if an audience is just starting their journey of understanding bias, I try to meet them where they are. Pandering to make white people feel safer is not my goal, so I've made a commitment to working long-term, on deeper understanding and consensus building. I also believe in ecosystems, where I can play my collect-your-cousins role, while freeing up others to focus on stronger justice-oriented views (so they don't spend their time bringing white people along). What do you think? Am I compromising too much?
Read our senior advisor Farhang Heydari's op-ed in The Hill on a critical step the Biden Administration just took to advance traffic safety, public safety, and racial justice. More low-level traffic stops don't make us safer. They erode trust, violate civil liberties, and make roads more dangerous for Black drivers. In our study in Nashville, we found no relationship between the number of police stops and crime levels. The way to make our roads safer isn't through more enforcement of low-level violations. It's through evidence-based strategies like designing safer roads with better lighting, creating protected bike lanes and pedestrian crossings, and expanding access to public transportation. https://lnkd.in/gnBq2GYM

In November 2023, we published an article by Advocate George Pearce, discussing the legality of e-scooters in Jersey and the lack of a legislative framework to regulate their use. This article has been re-published by Bailiwick Express following the recent sad news of two accidents involving e-scooters at the weekend. The purpose of this article is to highlight the need for legislation to ensure the safety of all road users. Traffic violence affects tens of thousands of New Yorkers each year, yet traditional responses to it often fail to address root causes while deepening racial and economic disparities in the justice system. Alternatives like the Driver Accountability Program aim to tackle those underlying issues, holding people accountable for driving-related offenses by encouraging reflection and behavioral change. Our new evaluation of the program in Brooklyn and Staten Island shows crucial signs of success at reducing rates of reoffending and shrinking the footprint of the justice system. ➡️ Read the full report today: https://lnkd.in/eTfNZV6u

Following complaints from residents and local businesses around Manchester, particularly regarding dangerous driving and inconsiderate parking around schools, we recently collaborated with Greater Manchester Police, Manchester City Council, and their Neighbourhood Compliance Team in the Gorton area to tackle the issue. Each week, we organised 'Action Days' in partnership with different agencies and schools to address illegal parking and untaxed vehicles. Our enforcement team quickly identified contraventions and took appropriate action. The aim of these days was to educate parents and children on the importance of parking correctly around schools. Additionally, we aimed to demonstrate the positive impact of our presence in keeping children safe and improving road safety during busy times. Today’s call to #disabilityaccess - we get on the spot fines for illegal car parking, so what not on the spot fines for a lack of ramp access to shops, restaurants and any public building? It will only be with action like this that the flawed law for “reasonable adjustment” can be supercharged into real change. #access #realchange

I am frustrated by the recent news of UNIFOR Local 333BC (my union) calling for stop closures within 100m of Pandora/Quadra. While I acknowledge the very real danger (and have actual examples of my own in just a year and a half of driving), closing stops is not a reasonable or effective solution. As a transit operator, I pride myself on getting the mosaic of people who rely on public transit to their destinations safely. I am loath to punish the significant majority of passengers who use those stops and are not part of the problem by denying them efficient access to transit. We need to address the root of the problem, not deploy knee-jerk, band-aid solutions that just create more problems for law-abiding people and, worse, move us as an organization away from our core mission in the community.
