The AI trap for salespeople in fintech. I've been noticing both a huge influx of cold emails for many different products - many of which have no remote relationship to anything I do professionally, and also an increase in the number of SDR types, as well as a huge decrease in the skills of the aforementioned. Here's my take: AI has been used to create a ton of software, especially prospecting, cold email generation, sequencers, etc. Basically, everything a salesperson had to both learn and develop a skill set for has now been basically automated. Here's the problem, as with all tech, these AI apps miss interpretation and they give a false sense of accomplishment to both firms and employees. Let me explain. A firm hires someone that's cheap because they don't need a full spectrum of sales skills because the AI takes care of that - but the AI isn't perfect and the salesperson has no idea what to do. AI can only take you so far. It's a complement, not a first-use product. I get so many emails for things that have literally ZERO to do with my company. I worked at a company called GrapeData and I often received cold emails about the wine business! We are clearly a fintech company that has NOTHING to do with wine, but because the word Grape is in our name I'd get wine emails. Tell me that isn't AI? Employers / Recruiters / CROs - take the extra time and step to actually speak with a candidate about what they've DONE and not how comfortable they are using software. A seasoned salesperson that knows how to reach a target is going to be 100% more effective, EVERY.SINGLE.TIME. than an AI program used for prospecting and email generation. ❌Companies that are doing the sales the old way are the ones who are going to fall behind! ❌SDR’s who don’t adapt to this will lose their jobs! I believe that in the future, companies will expect from SDRs to know all these AI sales tools and how to combine them to achieve personalization at scale. At the end of the day, whether we like It or not, it’s all about the money And paying one person that knows how to manage all these sales tools is cheaper & will produce better sales results than hiring bunch of SDR’s who are doing the outreach the old way.
