Learning & Development Strategist | Empowering L&D Professionals to Drive Business Value | Delivering Practical Solutions & Tangible Outcomes | Chief Learning Strategist at Learning Uncut

The first ever mention of AI on the Learning Uncut podcast was way back in June 2018 in Episode 3. I'm listening back over all the case study episodes of the podcast and my ears pricked up when I heard Tony Dunford talk about the coming impact of AI on future workforce skills and also the work of L&D teams. Take a look at his insights from 2018 and let me know how much you think things have shifted with the engagement with future skills development in your organisation - is it variable by department as Tony described it back in 2018 at Westpac? Or have most areas of your business bought in to the need to keep their skills abreast of ongoing change? Tony talked about 'future skills' or 'skills for life' as portable skills that employees would require in the future workplace regardless of their career paths. Drawing upon a range of research reports around 2017/2018 he gives examples such as virtual collaboration, creative problem-solving and data-driven judgment. These skills were portrayed as essential multipliers of an individual's capability, complementing techical competence and experience. When discussing the varying level of interest in investing in future skills development across business areas Tony noted that it was relatively easy to engage Group Technology/IT as they were regularly exposed to shifts in technology such as machine learning and AI. However, branch services and contact centres did not feel much pressure to adapt. Despite changes to customer facing technology, this part of the workforce was not (at the time) experiencing shifts in the technology they were using. L&D Professionals - The Westpac team was at the forefront of a lot of shifts in how L&D enables learning - including user generated content, curation, collaborative learning, product management. While this episode is six years old I think many L&D teams could pick up useful ideas and tips from listening to this episode.
