As conservation policies and mechanisms like Conservation Covenants continue to gain traction, there’s a growing need for skilled individuals entering the field. This shift creates unique opportunities and highlights the importance of fostering cognitive diversity from a range of backgrounds. At Legacy Habitat Banks, we believe that apprenticeships play a vital role in supporting this transition. Here’s why: 🎓 Increased Access to Education: Degree apprenticeships, such as the Environmental Management and Sustainability Degree Apprenticeship at Harper Adams University, provide an accessible route for individuals to gain a degree while working in the industry. This model encourages inclusivity and attracts talent from diverse backgrounds. 💼 Practical, On-the-Job Experience: Apprenticeships enable participants to gain real-world experience while working alongside seasoned professionals. This hands-on approach bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, ensuring a skilled and work-ready workforce. 🌱 Addressing Complex Challenges: The introduction of policies such as Biodiversity Net Gain places increased demand on ecological expertise from key stakeholders such as developers, local planning authorities, responsible bodies and habitat banks. There’s a pressing need for fresh perspectives. Apprenticeships help build that capacity by equipping individuals with both the technical and practical skills needed to address these challenges head-on. 🎫 Industry-Recognised Qualifications: With degrees accredited by professional institutions, apprenticeships offer formal recognition and pathways to professional memberships. This benefits both the apprentices and employers by aligning skills with industry standards. 🏢 Support for Employers: For employers like LHB, apprenticeships provide an opportunity to build and expand our talent pipeline, ensuring we have the right people with the right skills to support the growing demand for high-integrity biodiversity net gain initiatives. Apprenticeships are not just an investment in people—they’re an investment in the future of conservation.

I'm glad to share that I have completed my 2 month internship at Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency. Why an internship is important? Internships are vital as they offer practical experience, skill development, and networking opportunities, essential for launching a successful career and clarifying career goals. Let me share my journey. ✈ I had the opportunity to work in three directorates of Pak-EPA: 1) Lab/NEQS: In this directorate, I evaluated various parameters of rainwater and wastewater, including pH, EC, Turbidity, BOD, COD, and TDS. I conducted industrial surveys with the Pak-EPA team to update records and designed lab warning signs and protocols. 2) Legal/Enforcement: I delved into environmental law literature, understanding the implications of different sections in the Pakistan Environmental Protection Act 1997. During my tenure, I conducted site inspections of projects failing to comply with Sections 11 and 12 of PEPA 1997. 3) EIA/Monitoring: In the EIA/Monitoring directorate, I studied EIA and IEE rules and regulations of 2000, deepening my understanding of environmental impact assessment processes. Attending three public hearings, I listened to concerns from community members and neighbors affected by upcoming projects. Conclusion: During this internship, I applied my academic knowledge to real-world scenarios, gaining hands-on experience in lab work, inspections, surveys, environmental law, and impact assessment. These experiences have equipped me with essential skills for my future career in environmental management and regulation. In the end, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Ms. Sadia Munawar, DD(R&I) Pak-EPA, for providing me with this invaluable opportunity to work and for guiding me with her wealth of knowledge. #ProfessionalGrowth #Handsonlearning #GreenPakistan #Pakepa #Uaf

If you are passionate about environmental sustainability, the preservation of healthy wetlands, the protection of wildlife, or the conservation of endangered species, then you will be thrilled to learn about Kylies’ career journey! Meet Kylie Abouzeid, Environmental Analyst III our MassDOT Spotlight Employee this week! “I started with MassDOT in May 2022 as an Environmental Co-op in the Wetlands department. During my time as a co-op, I worked in both the Wetlands Unit and the Wildlife and Endangered Species Unit which are my two big passions. Learning about the different departments allowed me to determine what I was really drawn to and gain experience interpreting the complex regulations. I started full-time as an Environmental Analyst I in December 2022 and I have been promoted to Environmental Analyst III in April 2024. The scope of my job is ensuring that all projects that are in the design stages across Massachusetts receive the necessary permitting and clearances from regulatory agencies which protect Wetlands and Water Resources (including MassDEP, US Army Corps of Engineers, US Coast Guard, Coastal Zone Management). I have been lucky enough to work on the Cape Cod Bridges project and additionally I have enjoyed working on all projects that require US Coast Guard permitting because it is such a comprehensive process. Our team has been working on permitting twice as many projects this federal fiscal year as we did last year. One of my favorite things is when there are projects that are proposed in our hometowns, and it is so amazing how we get to watch them evolve. Environmental matters have a real-world impact right here and now and I am part of making those positive changes in our communities today. #Environmental #MassDOT #Wetland #Sustainability #Careerjourncy #Internship #Analyst

My Journey from Environmental Engineer to Industrial Hygienist Looking back on my university days studying Environmental Engineering, I’m reminded of the long nights and challenging projects that shaped who I am today. Graduating wasn’t just the end of my academic journey—it was the beginning of something greater. My first internship opened my eyes to the world of industrial hygiene, where science and safety intersect. Protecting people in the workplace became my passion, and I knew I’d found my path. The journey wasn’t always easy, but it taught me one important lesson: growth takes time, and every step matters. To those just starting out—stay curious and trust the process. Your journey is unfolding exactly as it should. #EnvironmentalEngineering #IndustrialHygiene #CareerGrowth #TrustTheProcess #NeverStopLearning
