I attended Drive conference by Exit Five and #Inbound by HubSpot over the last 2 weeks. This is who I met and what I learned. 1. The days of content marketing where it was about pumping out volume across every channel are dead. The key is to THINK LONGER and PRODUCE something REALLY GOOD. Be like The Walt Disney Company if you're in B2C. Be like Devin Reed, Ross Simmonds and Jen Allen-Knuth if you're in B2B. Then market it deeply, repurpose it thoughtfully and ENGAGE in real conversations about it. 2. The two B2B marketing influencers to watch closely are Dave Gerhardt and Jay Schwedelson. Study them - how they build community, how they communicate authentically, how they BUILD relentlessly. This is what b2b marketing looks like today. 3. Smaller conferences are the future. Drive was the first of its kind. Dave and his team showed us (B2B Marketers) a zero-to-one playbook for how to host a super valuable 200-person 1.5-day conference in a unique location that breaks even (I think?). More brands and communities should do these. 4. The key to larger conferences are the sub-events - community meetups, dinners, happy hours, and coffees coordinated over whatsapp groups. Jay Schwedelson and the Guru Media team put on a masterclass on how to TAKE OVER a conference. 5. Events are a GOLDMINE of data. I met up with Alon Alroy, cofounder/CMO of Bizzabo who hosted Inbound on their event stack and I was BLOWN AWAY by the amount of data and insights they were able to collect and report on, like number of networking connections made, top networkers, top booths, top sessions, and more. My mind went crazy with how all of that data could be used for growth.
