𝗙𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗳𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗝𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗻: 𝗗𝗼𝘇𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀, 𝟯 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗼𝗸𝗲 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁. Over the past two weeks, Fermify has been on an exciting journey through Japan, advancing partnerships with local food companies and connecting with new potential customers and investors. As we navigate this fascinating market, we’ve gathered valuable insights that might be helpful for others exploring opportunities in Japan’s sustainable and novel food sector. Here’s what we’ve learned: 𝟭️ 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 With global food imports and exports increasingly tied to geopolitical dynamics, Japan is keen on boosting its food independence. For a country of 120+ million people, this is no small task. Fermify’s precision fermentation technology, capable of replacing the land needed to sustain 7,000 cows with a 2,000 sqm casein production facility, aligns perfectly with these goals. It’s no wonder Japanese food business representatives regularly visit our demo facility in Vienna. 𝟮️ 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 Patience is key. Building trust and navigating the multi-layered decision-making processes in Japan can take years. Quick wins are rare, but for Fermify, the long-term potential of solid B2B partnerships makes every conversation worth the effort. 𝟯️ 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘁 (𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗻𝗼𝘄) While sustainability and animal welfare are high on the agenda in Europe and North America, Japanese consumers are less driven by these factors. Food companies prioritize commercial viability first. Fermify’s technology, projected to achieve price parity with milk casein by 2027, strikes a chord with this pragmatism. 𝟰️ 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗨𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 Japan lacks clear regulations for novel foods like precision-fermented proteins. Key questions, such as whether these will be classified as genetically modified, remain unanswered. Our takeaway? Even imperfect regulations are better than none - clarity fuels progress. 𝟱️ 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁 Understanding and respecting Japanese business culture is non-negotiable. Forget your business cards? You might as well book an early flight home. At Fermify, we’re committed to revolutionize the future of food. Japanese dairy industry holds immense potential, and we’re here for the long run. And for occasional Karaoke. #SustainableFood #Innovation #PrecisionFermentation #BusinessInJapan #FutureOfFood
