𝗙𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗳𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗝𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗻: 𝗗𝗼𝘇𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀, 𝟯 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗼𝗸𝗲 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁. Over the past two weeks, Fermify has been on an exciting journey through Japan, advancing partnerships with local food companies and connecting with new potential customers and investors. As we navigate this fascinating market, we’ve gathered valuable insights that might be helpful for others exploring opportunities in Japan’s sustainable and novel food sector. Here’s what we’ve learned: 𝟭️ 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 With global food imports and exports increasingly tied to geopolitical dynamics, Japan is keen on boosting its food independence. For a country of 120+ million people, this is no small task. Fermify’s precision fermentation technology, capable of replacing the land needed to sustain 7,000 cows with a 2,000 sqm casein production facility, aligns perfectly with these goals. It’s no wonder Japanese food business representatives regularly visit our demo facility in Vienna. 𝟮️ 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 Patience is key. Building trust and navigating the multi-layered decision-making processes in Japan can take years. Quick wins are rare, but for Fermify, the long-term potential of solid B2B partnerships makes every conversation worth the effort. 𝟯️ 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘁 (𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗻𝗼𝘄) While sustainability and animal welfare are high on the agenda in Europe and North America, Japanese consumers are less driven by these factors. Food companies prioritize commercial viability first. Fermify’s technology, projected to achieve price parity with milk casein by 2027, strikes a chord with this pragmatism. 𝟰️ 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗨𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 Japan lacks clear regulations for novel foods like precision-fermented proteins. Key questions, such as whether these will be classified as genetically modified, remain unanswered. Our takeaway? Even imperfect regulations are better than none - clarity fuels progress. 𝟱️ 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁 Understanding and respecting Japanese business culture is non-negotiable. Forget your business cards? You might as well book an early flight home. At Fermify, we’re committed to revolutionize the future of food. Japanese dairy industry holds immense potential, and we’re here for the long run. And for occasional Karaoke. #SustainableFood #Innovation #PrecisionFermentation #BusinessInJapan #FutureOfFood

自国内での展開が厳しいスタートアップは、市場がスピーディに開拓されている地域に進出して、プロダクトをローンチし、改善していく必要がありますね 🤔 【Comparison of Alternative Protein Policies and Regulations in Various Countries】 #145 Comparison and scoring of policies and regulations related to alternative proteins in 10 countries worldwide 😮 According to the article, Singapore, North America (Canada and the United States), and Israel, known as hotspots for food tech, scored high and ranked at the top. APAC area such as China, South Korea, Australia was at the bottom. Considering the market size, North America could be seen as a promising region. Looking at the summarized table, it appears that most countries have incorporated alternative protein development into their national strategies and are providing R&D support. However, in regions with strict regulations, it is clear that products cannot be launched, and market development is delayed. Startups facing difficulties in domestic expansion need to enter regions where markets are being rapidly developed, launch their products, and continue to improve them 🤔 #foodtech #alternativeprotein #regulation #policy #フードテック #代替タンパク https://lnkd.in/gX553xeF

🇪🇸🌱 CATALONIA PROMOTES BOOMING ALT-PROTEIN SECTOR TO FOREIGN INVESTORS As Spain’s alternative protein sector expands, Catalonia is hoping to become a centre of innovation for these future foods. A new report by the government’s Catalonia Trade & Investment agency reveals that the autonomous region is home to 112 companies in the sector, which employ 1,031 people and generate €301M in revenue. But it expects the number of businesses working with alternative proteins to “grow exponentially in the coming years”. In what is dubbed as the “first comprehensive analysis of this field” in the region, the state agency claims it ranks 14th on the global list of alternative protein projects receiving foreign direct investment. The report seems to be an effort to attract foreign businesses to Catalonia, with a statement from Bernat Ananos Martinez, co-founder and plant-based meat leader Heura Foods (which is based in Barcelona, the Catalan capital), outlining as much: “Barcelona and Catalonia are the perfect place from which to lead the protein transition.” Among the 112 companies identified by Catalonia Trade and Investment are those that deal exclusively with alternative proteins (like Heura), as well as meat and dairy companies with plant-based product lines. Moreover, there are players specializing in ingredients for taste, aroma and texture enhancements, supplements, and other areas. The report stresses that it’s not just companies that make up the alternative protein ecosystem in Catalonia – it’s also populated by business organisations and associations, technology transfer platforms, incubators, as well as universities and research centres, like Eatable Adventures, Forward Fooding and INNOVACC Clúster català de la carn i la proteïna alternativa. Meanwhile, trade fairs like Alimentaria Barcelona, BIOCULTURA, Hispack, Free From Functional Food Expo, and HOSTELCO also focus on this area. "An infinite source of meat". This idea has been playing on repeat since I heard Jasper say it two weeks ago at the global launch of 'Forged', Vow's cultured quail. It's typical to hear these kind of grandiose ideas in pitch decks, with little proof of concept. But... - Vow are selling 'Forged' in Singapore. - They've won regulatory approval by the forensically meticulous SFA. - Their factories are ramping up production every day. - The cells production *doubles* every 24 hours. - AND it tastes SO GOOD. ...An infinite source of meat. In our work on the future of food, we use a five-point litmus test to test the potential of novel ingredients: 1 - Is it viable and scalable? 2 - Does it reduce GHG emissions per unit as it scales? 3 - Is it nutritiously dense? 4 - Is it delicious, people can't help but eat it? 5 - Does it resolve a cultural tension/ consumer need? In a world where the impact of climate change is making it harder to grow enough food. A growing, ageing, more prosperous population are consuming more. Where ingredients are becoming less diverse and less nutritionally dense... Vow looks like a breath of fresh air, dreaming up new foods, flavours and textures that didn't exist before. 🇸🇬 If you're in Singapore, I highly recommend snapping up the final seats to try Forged, a seven-course omakase, running at Mandala until Saturday https://hubs.ly/Q02rVYTq0 👏 George Peppou, Sarah Separovich, Jasper Veen #futureoffood

🌎🌎 Fighting Coffee Issue ☕️☕️ 🌱 Brewing Up a Sustainable Future: Innovations in FoodTech ☕ After attending the 2024 Agri-Food Tech Expo Asia in Singapore, I am brimming with inspiration from the groundbreaking innovations shaping the future of food. One of the conversation resonated with me was the rise of alternative coffee—a revolutionary solution blending sustainability, innovation, and a forward-thinking approach to one of the world’s (also mine) most beloved beverages. The insightful article by Forward Fooding, “Brewing Up a Sustainable Future with Alternative Coffee,” dives into how startups are challenging traditional coffee production methods. These innovators are addressing critical issues like climate change, resource scarcity, and supply chain pressures. https://lnkd.in/g8AjGWeR What struck me most was the potential of alternative coffee to: • Reduce environmental impact by decreasing water and land use compared to traditional coffee farming. • Mitigate risks in coffee supply chains caused by unpredictable climate conditions. • Empower consumers to enjoy their coffee guilt-free while contributing to sustainability goals. Proud to see our friend, Prefer | bean-free coffee, Jake Berber mentioned in the article too. At the expo, I saw firsthand how agritech is transforming the future of food and beverages. From lab-grown produce to AI-driven farming solutions, these advancements are paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient food system. The innovation in alternative coffee is just the beginning of what’s possible when we combine cutting-edge technology with a commitment to sustainability. I’m excited to see how these trends will continue to evolve and create a lasting impact on global food security and sustainability. What innovations in the food and beverage industry inspire you most? Let’s discuss! #Sustainability #AgriFoodTech #FoodInnovation #AlternativeCoffee #FutureOfFood #AgriTech
