Growing place-based impact investing in the UK

🎙️PBII Podcast of the Week: Introduction to Rebalance Earth 🌱 Over the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing some standout podcasts that are informing and inspiring our work at the Impact Investing Institute on Place-Based Impact Investing (PBII). This week, I’m excited to highlight a thought-provoking episode from Rebalance Earth featuring co-founders Robert Gardner and Walid Al Saqqaf - Rebalance Earth. They dive deep into their journey of viewing nature as an asset class—and why it’s a game-changer for both business and our planet. 💡 Why this conversation matters: At first glance, the idea of treating nature as an “asset class” might sound strange and even extractive. However, as Rob explains, it’s about “re-wiggling capitalism” to support regenerative models, not exploitative ones. This approach is about reshaping business to align with a sustainable future. Key Takeaways: 1️⃣ Our pensions provide us with financial security for the future. But what good is that if we invest them in systems that damage the world we’re meant to retire into? 2️⃣ Viewing nature as “business-critical infrastructure” allows us to strategically invest in the natural environment—and in our future. 3️⃣ Engaging with investors who have long-term time horizons (like pension funds) is key. Excitingly, West Yorkshire LGPS have just announced a £5m investment in the fund. 4️⃣ Developing localy tailored solutions to climate impacts—like flooding—by collaborating with affected stakeholders is crucial. 5️⃣ The 2% allocation rule: even a (relatively) small investment in natural capital can make a huge impact without significantly altering a portfolio’s risk profile. 6️⃣ Nature & health are strongly connected. Research shows people living near healthy rivers enjoy better mental and physical wellbeing— imagine the health benifits of investing in nature at scale. If you’re interested in place-based impact investing, natural capital (or the future of our planet!) I highly recommend giving this episode a listen. It’s just the beginning of what promises to be an insightful series! 🔗 Watch or listen to the podcast here: https://lnkd.in/eQZKgcZ4 #PlaceBasedImpactInvesting #NaturalCapital #SustainableInvesting #RegenerativeFinance #ImpactInvesting #ClimateAction #FutureOfBusiness #PBII #RebalanceEarth
