  • Yesterday morning, together with Herbert Smith Freehills we hosted a breakfast discussion on this year's outcomes of the UN Climate Conference COP29 bringing together key stakeholders in climate finance like investors and charitable foundations. Thank you to Jannis Bille for walking us through the practicalities of how the political negotiations at COP actually work. Thank you also to the brilliant Jess Ayers, CEO of the Quadrature Climate Foundation who talked about the impact of some of the key announcements on climate finance. We discussed the practical steps it will take to scale private capital for a fair and inclusive transition to net zero including the "Climate Finance Staircase" which describes the different sources that can deliver the $1.3 trillion needed to support developing countries to cut emissions and deal with the impacts of climate change. It was great to hear from Kerstin M., Policy & Innovation Director at the City of London Corporation, Leslie Johnston, M.Sc., CEO of Laudes Foundation and Clare Hierons, Head of Finance & Capital Markets Transformation at Laudes, Ashok Gupta, Chair of Mercer, Maria Teresa Zappia, Chief Impact and Blended Finance Officer and Deputy CEO at BlueOrchard Finance Ltd and Heike Schmitz, Partner at Herbert Smith Freehills. At the Impact Investing Institute, we continue our work on mobilising more capital for a fair and inclusive - a just - transition to a net zero world. We're looking forward to working with Laudes Foundation on mobilising more investment for fair and inclusive transition in critical industries that are crucial to the climate transition. #climatefinance #sustainableInvesting #COP29 #NetZero #impactinvesting

  • Exciting progress in the European impact investing market! A new report from the European Impact Investing Consortium, a partnership that brings together organisations including Impact Europe, GSG Impact and several of its European national partners, reveals that unlisted impact investments in Europe reached a record €190 billion in 2023, growing 20% from the prior year. This growth comes despite challenging economic conditions, demonstrating the resilience and increasing importance of impact investing in Europe and beyond. The UK, Netherlands, and France led the way in impact investing, benefiting from robust regulatory environments and high levels of institutional investor engagement. Our own recent research for the UK also shows a growth of the impact investing market to £76.8 billion in 2023, a 10 % compound annual growth rate since 2021. This marked growth for the UK has outpaced the broader UK asset management sector. The continued growth of impact investing, even in challenging times, demonstrates its increasing importance and maturity within the European financial landscape and beyond. We're excited to see what the future holds as more investors, businesses, and policymakers come together to drive capital towards positive impact. For more details see link to report in the comments. #impactinvesting #market #growth

  • Great news for inclusive finance! This week, the British Business Bank announced £150 million in new funding - via the Community ENABLE Funding programme - to boost Community Development Finance Institutions (CDFIs), local lenders who support small enterprises that struggle to get mainstream bank loans. JPMorganChase Foundation is also providing £4million grant funding to support CDFIs build their capacity to help more small businesses and establish the essential foundations to accelerate the sectors growth. Why this matters: ✅ CDFIs currently lend £102M each year to small businesses, so this funding will dramatically increase their ability to help entrepreneurs across the UK ✅ 98% of CDFI lending happens outside London ✅ 41% goes to women-led businesses ✅ 24% supports minority-led enterprises ✅ They focus on businesses that banks typically don't serve, with 60% of their lending in the UK's most disadvantaged areas What makes this initiative particularly noteworthy is its dual-phase design: The initial government-backed capital will create immediate impact, while the subsequent opening to private sector investors promises to build sustainable funding mechanisms for the future. This is a game-changing moment for inclusive finance in the UK. By significantly boosting CDFIs' lending power, we are helping create real opportunities for entrepreneurs who have traditionally been left out of the financial mainstream. At the Impact Investing Institute we will continue to work with our partners and others including the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and Lloyds Bank to engage other investors in the sector and raise awareness of the incredible impact and potential of CDFIs to support small businesses to thrive. #impactinvesting #CDFIs #announcements
