AEW's UK Impact Fund (UKIF) was "day one ready" on 31 July to adopt the Financial Conduct Authority's 'Sustainability Impact' label, thanks to its bespoke impact measurement and management (IMM) system designed by our Impact Services team. UKIF is an open-ended fund seeded with a £100 million portfolio of UK impact assets, including supported living, key worker accommodation, care homes, and community-focused town centre regeneration projects. Since 2022, our Impact Services team has collaborated with AEW to develop a comprehensive IMM system tailored to their place-based, mixed-asset strategy. This system aligns with best practices from Impact Frontiers, Place-Based Impact Investing traits, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We are pleased to announce the release of our third Sustainable Investors Fund Impact Report, Advancing Impact Outcomes. In this report, we share our progress on impact and highlight the outcomes that our investees are enabling for their end beneficiaries.   Capricorn established the Sustainable Investors Fund (SIF) to support early-stage, mission-aligned asset management firms capable of driving change at scale. Our approach is anchored in the belief that impact and competitive financial returns are not mutually exclusive – and that a large addressable gap exists in allocating capital to pressing global issues. This gap must be filled by asset managers with innovative approaches to investing for both returns and impact, at scale.   In our 2023 impact report, we outlined SIF’s vision across several key issue areas. As the appetite for impact investing grows among institutional asset owners, The Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN) sheds light on what defines an effective impact approach. A recent position paper from GIIN presents case studies of South Yorkshire Pension Fund, Dutch PGGM, Zurich Insurance, and MassMutual, showcasing a trio of strategies they share: 1️⃣ Defined Impact Priorities - Each investor has set clear priorities that align with their beneficiaries’ values, ensuring their investments address specific social or environmental needs. 2️⃣ Portfolio-Wide Opportunities - Identifying impact investments across asset classes enables a diversified yet focused approach. 3️⃣ Dual Focus on Returns & Outcomes - These institutional investors balance financial goals with meaningful, positive real-world outcomes aligned with their chosen impact priorities. GIIN’s Director of Institutional Engagement, Christian Rosenholm, emphasises the growing interest and potential influence institutional asset owners hold in impact investing. Currently, only 1% of global capital is dedicated to impact strategies; increasing this could significantly drive progress on global challenges. 👉 “If we can get to 5%, if we can get to 10%, we’ll have solved a lot of things,” Rosenholm notes. “We want a new partnership with investors, businesses and charities. All the best examples of things that are built to last are when they have been built together,” says Lisa Nandy, Secretary of State for Department for Culture, Media and Sport in the foreword to the latest market sizing report from the Impact Investing Institute.   It is great to see charities​ and philanthropy referenced in the report.   As Lisa Nandy’s quote suggests, we cannot achieve the full potential for positive, sustainable change in our communities and the wider world without the effective deployment of capital across the full spectrum of capital.   Responsible business, ESG, impact investing, social investing and philanthropy all play different and important roles in driving positive change for people and planet. As countries across Africa face increased fragility from climate-related shocks, pandemics, and social unrest, financial resilience is essential. In ARC Ltd.’s panel discussion at COP29 yesterday (14 November), Avinash Ramessur and expert panellists, including FIONA STEWART (The World Bank Group), Lindelwe Lesley Ndlovu (ARC Ltd.), Jenny Bates (UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office), Rowan Douglas CBE (Howden), and Albano Manjate (Mozambique Ministry of Economy and Finance), discussed game-changing approaches to disaster risk financing and resilience-building. They unpacked the urgent need for prearranged financing rather than relying on reactive, ad-hoc responses, which often divert national funds intended for essential sectors like health and education. Albano Manjate, who heads up the Climate Finance Unit at Mozambique’s Ministry of Economy and Finance, explained that resources must be channelled directly to impactful sectors – especially those supporting communities and small businesses – to enable quick, effective resilience measures. However, he pointed out that when resources are made available, directing them to vulnerable, low-income populations remains challenging. World Bank Lead Financial Sector Specialist, Fiona Stewart, said that standards are being established to guide these efforts, and financing programmes are underway to ensure different needs are covered by an appropriate mechanism and ready to act when needed. She briefly unpacked the World Bank’s crisis response toolkit, which is one of these initiatives being put in place to support countries. Jenny Bates echoed this, emphasising the need to improve coherence on disaster risk financing and support locally-led delivery while ensuring that financing mechanisms are sustainable over time. She stressed that financing instruments should be matched to risks, and they should be used in a creative and collective manner.
