The Treasurer’s speech to business group CEDA this week was designed to manage expectations about the May Budget - there’s no cash to dispense, but there is to be a focus on investment to drive growth. https://lnkd.in/ghViTqWf The main point from the Climate Capital Forum’s perspective is that the government is developing a “whole‑of‑government” investment strategy, which is great. But without a strategic investment of public capital to back it in, investors will lack confidence. Our policy proposals that can drive investment in the renewable energy revolution are outlined in our pre-budget submission: https://lnkd.in/gHMjBVWB

Australia has approved the world's largest solar farm! 🇦🇺 The $24 billion SunCable project, backed by visionary investor Mike Cannon-Brookes, has received the green light from the Australian government, with Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek hailing it as a major step towards a sustainable future. This ambitious project will power millions of homes and export electricity to Singapore, with crucial input from Singapore's energy market authority and the Indonesian government. Kudos to Cameron Garnsworthy of SunCable for leading this transformative initiative and to Ken Baldwin of the Energy Change Institute for highlighting its global significance. With strong support from the Climate Council, led by Amanda McKenzie, and the involvement of Australian Indigenous communities, this project is a true game-changer in the global energy landscape. #RenewableEnergy #GreenEnergy #Australia #SunCable #Sustainability #ClimateAction #GlobalEnergy #Solar https://lnkd.in/g8rka2av

🌟 At the ACORE Finance Forum in NYC (June 7-8, 2023), leaders in renewable energy gathered to discuss navigating the investment landscape amidst the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), inflation and permitting issues. Key themes included the IRA's impact on project siting, content sourcing, and financing, with a focus on innovative approaches for urban and disadvantaged communities. We're excited to be working with teams in Puerto Rico, Los Angeles and Illinois on urban solar subsidies. The importance of community solar projects and the collaboration between finance, industry, and government drives the energy transition. #ACOREFinanceForum #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability #CleanEnergy

Energy transition and investment protection - some of the takeaways from a panel discussion with Edward Attenborough, Yuliya Chernykh and Ludwik Jurek, expertly moderated by Filip Balcerzak. - Clean energy investments require significant government support, mainly due to weak project fundamentals. - Government support schemes vary and are plentiful, but all are subject to the risk of regulatory change. - Support schemes for clean hydrogen, CCS and other low-carbon solutions either replicate or are modelled on support schemes for renewables - we may see another wave of investment claims in the future (especially in relation to some of the most generous schemes). - It is possible to structure clean energy investments in a way that maximises access to investment protection - but this needs to be done early. - Contractual arrangements are increasingly relevant and can be very helpful as a form of a proactive approach to investment protection. Five years ago, we published a paper with Simon Maynard asking whether the ECT was ready for the energy transition: https://lnkd.in/diVeCPaP. We argued then that it was not. Fast forward five years, it's a different discussion, more of a post-ECT world, but the question remains - how to move the energy transition agenda forward, possibly efficiently, while mitigating the risk of investment disputes. I'm looking forward to continuing the debate and work on these issues!
