We’ve announced the cohort and are now delighted to reveal our host council for Challenge 1 in January - Buckinghamshire Council Cllr Martin Tett, Leader of Buckinghamshire Council said: “We’re thrilled to be hosting the LG Challenge 2025. Buckinghamshire Council is a young and forward-thinking organisation and we are really proud to be supporting innovation and best practice in our sector in this way. “The challenge is a fantastic chance for participants to stretch themselves and provides an opportunity for us all to look at new ways to face challenge and find solutions. I am a firm believer that councils should take every opportunity to learn from each other as part of how we continue to develop as organisations and as a sector as a whole; Buckinghamshire Council is proud to be playing such a key role in supporting this event in the coming year.” We can’t wait to be on site to reveal the topic and see what ideas the cohort generate. #LGChallenge #LocalGov #Leadership Local Government Association

Kate Markey - thank you, genuinely. And also – STOP IT, you two! You know I've always thought (in LinkedInGush-style) that you're truly inspiring and joy to work with, or (in the terms Liam Black, you and I would recognise a bit more) you're feckin' awesome. But I wasn't fishing. I'm just still wrestling with the age-old ends and means thing and want to see how others are handling the Purpose and also Culture stuff. I'm acknowledging I veer from one to the other, and there's always a cost, usually paid by others. And I'm looking surprised every time a leader or an organisation tells me they've got them perfectly reconciled, or that one automatically leads to the other (plus business success). I would like that to be true, I’m not sure it always is. I look at papers on how to treat employees better and I agree with every word - and I also wonder, is all the work going to get done? I see business plans to make the world a better place that involve everyone giving double-time-effort - voluntarily at first, then becoming baked into the model because the world sees a need but not the funding streams for it. I listen to organisations who want my organisation Forward Institute to help them be more human and I welcome it, but I also notice how often they'd rather shy away from discussions about whether their core business model makes them a net giver or a net taker of people and planetary resources. I’m sure others have it cracked better than me, so I’m open to tips and corrections (and confessions if you worry about this too).
Our Senior Director, Ruth Turner, took the stage at B Lab UK Festival last week, alongside Tom Ebbutt, Greg Clark, and George Dibb to discuss “Putting ‘Business for Good’ at the Heart of Our Politics." As long-time members of the B-Corp movement, we (Forward Institute) have seen firsthand how it pushes organisations to both celebrate their successes and highlight and work on their weaknesses. We asked Ruth to write up her reflections on the event as a whole and some of the takeaways from the panel she sat on. You can read her reflections here: https://lnkd.in/ekEbN2tW As we advocate for a better world through business, let’s challenge ourselves to ask the hard questions: Are we focused on the most important things? And are we making the necessary trade-offs between culture and purpose to drive real impact? #LeadershipDevelopment #BCorp #BusinessForGood #Purpose #WorkplaceCulture #Leadership

Read our past report, Implementing Systemwide Changes in the CSU, authored by Thad Nodine and Robert Gabriner. This report found that the Academy served as a catalyst in helping campus teams address resistance and take advantage of opportunities for substantive change through leadership, communications, and networking. As a result, the Academy appears to be well positioned, with additional supports and resources, to facilitate and deepen campus efforts to address long-standing issues such as equity. We have two spots left for the Leaderful Marlborough programme, which kicks off on 18 July. Applications close on Matariki, Friday 28 June. Who's keen? What's Leaderful Marlborough? This initiative is all about improving productivity and the opportunities in the Marlborough region to make more vibrant communities, create a thriving economy, and attract more people and business to the region. We’re taking a multi-year approach to this. We’re starting by finding and bringing together a community of emerging leaders who choose to make Marlborough their home and are committed to contributing to a thriving, leaderful Marlborough. Another big thank you on the anniversary of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Commonwealth Study Conference, which opened in Banff one year ago. CSC2023 was a major leadership development initiative, taking place over two weeks, engaging nearly 300 members from more than 30 countries. More than 200 alumni volunteers from Canada and around the Commonwealth “gave back” to ensure the new members could their development experience. The core planning for CSC2023 was undertaken by Canadian alumni of the CSC and Governor General’s leadership conferences, and was initiated by the CSC Canada Committee - starting before COVID. From establishing the theme, to setting guidelines for study tours, to developing pre-conference webcasts and video testimonials, their engagement was absolutely essential. The impact speaks for itself, with a recent Conference survey showing 99% of the delegates describe CSC2023 as a valuable experience (75% saying extremely valuable), 94% describing the Conference as more valuable than other conferences and programs they have attended, and 88% saying the experience made them a better leader. As Lead Director responsible for the global program, another huge THANK YOU from all CSC2023 participants to the CSC Canada Committee members, many of whom also gave their time as regional chairs: Marie Buchan, Catherine Dallaire, Stephen Dorsey, Marc-André Franche, Michael Hale, Lisa Browne, Beth Valiaho, Jason Heistad, Adam Janikowski, Sandra Laronde, Kirby Brown, Amrit Mehta, Kuthula Matshazi, Sarah Midanik, Charles Bierbrier, Pierre Verreault, Yanouk Poirier, Angela Talic, Steven Piepgrass, Ed McHugh, Aileen O’Rafferty, Sybil Wa, Matt Wayland, Bruce Willmer, Wanda Charles, Catherine Pennington, Dan Boulet. #csc2023 #leadershipcanada #commonwealthleadersglobal #CSCglobalalumni

Thanks for sharing, Matt. I think that what is being pointed to here is in leadership as in life, “appropriation”is key. Great leaders develop their own style, but some can adjust some of that innate style to suit the context (people and circumstances). Being too flexible or collaborative can sometimes be perceived by others as lacking conviction or self determination, so it is a function of the critical assessment and judgment exercised by the leader. An appropriate response to overall context is the X factor in leadership. It’s the difference between a theoretical approach to leadership and an approach honed by self awareness, exposure and experience. The learning of the concept of leadership is best done in concert of different contexts, in parallel with developing self awareness. This program is a great opportunity for aspiring and emerging leaders to be exposed to an informed and enlightened approach to leadership development- in real time, and with real world exposure. As Cathy says, “situational leadership” is that which recognises the situational context, and brings appropriate leadership to the table. This also requires significant self awareness- of one’s own ego and leadership style.
"Lead me, follow me, or get the hell out of my way" This is one of my favourite quotes from General George Patton and I constantly return to it. I was fortunate to attend last nights Committee for Geelong Annual Dinner and Leadership Graduation (congrats to Nik Petrovski and all the other graduates) as we welcomed another group of leaders into the Leaders for Geelong alumni. We heard a rivetting speech from Anna Meares OAM OLY on moving from being a champion athlete to a leader of athletes in her role as Chef de Mission of the Australian Olympic Committee team. Her mentality as a leader, to build a great team, to listen and empathise and then to lead with strength and honour was an example for so many current and aspiring leaders. Anna spoke about how a dictatorial and authoritarian style of positional leadership was an anachronism and created a culture that was not conducive to effective performance. But something I have seen creeping in, somewhat in response to this but for other reasons too, is the push towards collaboration as the substitute for leadership. This is both naive and dangerous. Collaboration is a product of good leadership and this good leadership will be neither dictatorial or wholly consensus driven either. There are times when we need to be decisive, to be deliberate and for people to "...get the hell out of my way." But the ability to take this decisive and deliberate action for the benefit of those that we lead is predicated on first building the trust of those that you lead. Anna exemplified this in her fostering the relationships and building the trust needed so in those times where that decisive leadership was required, people knew she was doing it for them, not for her. I hope our leaders both present and future continue to see the need for the qualities that Anna exemplifies. #geelong #geelongbusiness #lfg #lfg KPMG Australia Committee for Geelong Geelong Chamber of Commerce Geelong Cats City of Greater Geelong G21 Geelong Region Alliance Geelong Advertiser Times News Group Advanced Fibre Cluster
