🌿🌏 Landcare Week is the perfect time to share the impactful work of Western Landcare on seed nurseries for rangelands rehydration. Far western NSW faced a significant challenge with no accessible seed collection sites to support local conservation. To address this, Western Landcare, with funding from the NSW Environmental Trust, established 20 seed nurseries on properties across the region. 🌱 These nurseries, each measuring 1 hectare and protected by exclusion fencing, serve as critical sources for collecting and dispersing locally endemic seeds. Over the past couple of years, favourable rainfall and dedicated monitoring have shown great results, providing stable ecological habitats that accelerate landscape recovery. 🌳💧 This initiative is a key component of Rangeland Rehydration and 'RAIN READY' techniques, ensuring the availability of native seeds for ongoing rehabilitation efforts. Let’s work together to protect and enhance our environment. 👉 Learn more and get involved with Western Landcare NSW: https://ow.ly/6lAx50SVhfn #LandcareWeek2024 #LandcareIsForEveryone #SeedNurseries #RangelandsRehydration #CommunityInvolvement #Sustainability #LandcareAustralia #LandcareNSW #WesternLandcare Supported by the NSW Landcare Program.

🌿🐭 Contributing to Dormouse Conservation 🐭🌿 I’ve just completed Natural England's Species Conservation Strategies: Strategic Licensing Hazel Dormouse Pilot Stakeholder Survey. Despite legislative protection, between 2000 and 2022 monitoring shows that the national population of hazel dormice has fallen by 70%. Hazel dormice face significant challenges, including habitat loss and fragmentation, and while I believe there are issues outside licensing, a more streamlined licensing process could be a step in the right direction. Done well, it has the potential to promote higher quality compensatory habitats at a landscape scale and improve conservation outcomes. A quicker and more cost-effective option for our clients will no doubt also be welcomed, making it easier to achieve compliance while supporting vital conservation goals. If you work with, are affected by, or have an interest in hazel dormouse licensing, I encourage you to take part. Your voice could help ensure we develop effective strategies to support this species' recovery. 🕒 It takes around 30 minutes to complete the survey: 👉 https://lnkd.in/eAtWXYU7 #Conservation #Dormouse #SpeciesConservation #WildlifeProtection #Sustainability #Development

Project Laxford, our landscape scale, ecosystem-wide conservation project aiming to restore wild Atlantic salmon and sea trout populations, has been recognised with a national conservation award. Last week, Grosvenor’s Reay Forest Estate received a Scottish Land & Estates' Helping It Happen award, supported by Nature Scot – Scotland’s nature agency, advising the government on improving the environment – and celebrating initiatives that are having a transformative effect on their communities, environment and local economy. As part of Project Laxford, this autumn, we’ve tagged 2,000 juvenile salmon to gather invaluable information on their survival rates and to monitor the impact of our nature recovery work. Each year, hundreds of young salmon are microchipped, using the same technology as in domestic pets, enabling the project team to track the tagged fish as they leave the catchment and on their return from the sea as adults. Earlier this year, 72,000 native trees – the first of a planned million – were planted, helping to regenerate the land and restore habitats, enhancing biodiversity as well as providing the best possible conditions for salmon and sea trout to thrive. Mangrove conservation isn't just about saving trees - it's about people! 22 Over 100 million people live near mangrove forests, depending on these ecosystems for their livelihoods, sustenance, and safety. These remarkable ecosystems support local fisheries that can be worth up to $57,000 per hectare annually, providing a crucial economic lifeline for coastal communities. Beyond their economic value, mangroves act as natural storm barriers, shielding vulnerable areas from destructive weather events. So when we invest in mangrove restoration - we're also investing in people's well-being. #MangroveRestoration #CommunitySupport #NaturalProtection

🐨 Landholders - Koalas need your help 🐨 This is your opportunity to leave a legacy for future generations by protecting koala habitat on your land. We are currently identifying properties in the Northern Rivers that may be eligible for a private land Conservation Agreement over a portion of their land. The area under agreement is registered on the title in perpetuity, thus securing these populations into the future. This requires a minimum of 20ha of intact native forest in moderate to good condition. Up to $45,000 of habitat restoration funding is delivered through Envite Environment, a local not-for-profit organisation which provides ecological restoration and bush regeneration services. Eligible activities include: weed control, revegetation, fencing, nest box installation and repairs to existing features such as tracks to maintain the conservation area. This is in addition to discounts on rates and land taxes. If you would like an initial site visit to discuss the criteria and eligible activities, Fiona Dawson from Envite would love to hear from you: Fiona Dawson | Envite Environment Koala Habitat Restoration Ecologist 0427 957 277 | [email protected] Visit our website to find out more: https://lnkd.in/gedYRd3h This project is delivered in partnership with: WWF-Australia Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water Threatened Species Commissioner Biodiversity Conservation Trust #BushRegeneration #SaveTheKoala #Conservation #ThreatenedSpecies #EndangeredSpecies #Biodiversity

The JV8 Business Plan to Recover North America’s Central Grasslands: Strategies, Funding, and Partnerships Needed to Save One of the World’s Most Endangered Ecosystems is now available! This new plan is a bold and ambitious blueprint that scales up grassland habitat stewardship and conservation through collaboration. There are three important things to know about the plan: ➡️ In the JV-style of strategic conservation, the plan uses the science of grassland agencies and partners to identify metrics for grassland conservation to address cropland conversion and woody shrub encroachment; the plan contributes to the Central Grasslands Roadmap outcomes of collaboration and links to multiple other efforts in the biome. ➡️Conservation costs are calculated for protection, restoration, enhancement, persistence/retention, and capacity-building to develop shared funding goals and actions. We need to work together to raise $1.3 B annually by 2034. ➡️Partnerships across regional and local scales are amplified through JV stories of grassland conservation with multiple references to the types of partners and programs that are making a difference in grassland conservation. 👍 Like this post if YOU are one of those partners who are helping shape the future of the Central Grasslands! These are the “go-to” entities to invest in! If you are interested in scaling up grassland conservation, please check out this important resource, share messages with your community to support grassland strongholds, and/or connect with your local JV to advance habitat work and accomplishments across scales. 🌽🐄🌳 Working lands—farms, ranches, and forests—make up nearly 60% of the U.S. land mass, totaling approximately 900 million acres! Despite only 1.6% of agricultural land and 3.2% of forested land currently under conservation, there is immense potential to enhance this effort through available funding programs. These vital landscapes not only contribute significantly to our food security and local economies but also provide essential ecosystem services and habitats for wildlife. Conservation of working lands bridges the gap between economic productivity and ecological health, protecting these lands while allowing landowners to continue their operations. Ontario's proposal to expand our system of protected and conserved areas by adding 10,324 hectares is great news. While not showcased in the summaries, several areas are crucial for supporting species at risk, include candidate Key Biodiversity Areas, and serve as vital links in wildlife corridors. About half of these are also in southern Ontario, one of Canada’s crisis ecoregions. Many of the new sites in southern Ontario were the result of private land securement that was completed over a decade ago and they should have been added to our parks system much earlier. This also highlights that the dedicated and determined conservation efforts of so many groups often don’t show up on the public radar for years. How can we accelerate the development of our network of provincially protected and conserved areas? 1. Remove Barriers and Support Indigenous-led Conservation: Enhance support and capacity-building for Indigenous-led conservation efforts, particularly in northern Ontario. 2. Strengthen Capacity for Private Land Conservation: Boost the capabilities of organizations facilitating private land donations and purchases, especially in southern Ontario. 3. Introduce Provincial Tax Incentives for Land Conservation: Implement provincial income tax incentives similar to the federal EcoGifts program, encouraging landowners to donate lands for conservation purposes. Provincial income tax incentives are provided for mineral exploration (SK,MB) and logging (BC) and should be expanded to promote nature conservation. https://lnkd.in/gyHhhJ8D
