Literally every media house posting about 8000 unplaced students at IITs without doing any research 💯 . . . Media houses don't do research and cause havoc all around. Definitely economic slowdown is affecting hiring but the way it is presented causes stress among Indian parents and students more than anything. As per the old stats, It was 21% in 2023 and in 2022 it was 19%, according to the TeamLease Services report. The percentage has gone up and these are some of the reasons: - Many students go for Higher studies, Civil Services, Own Startups even after registering for placements. Most just never sits for 6 or lower LPA job companies. - Total 10-15 IITs and NITs combined, has been added in last 10 yrs. The placements stats are not like top IITs but their unplaced numbers does contribute to overall count. - AI effect and economic slowdown is real, Companies are hiring less than ever and that too for fresher roles. Disclaimer: This post is not to defame any org but an urge to spread researched information. Please feel free to add any correction, Views are my own. #iitplacement #iit #recession #news #iitbombay
Don't you think that if some IITians are going for the Civil Services exam, they should not have gone to IIT in the first place? Why are they filling a seat in an IIT college and then filling a seat again in the UPSC exam? Why is that? All passion for engineering vanished in 4 years? Or is the 'India Education System' a topic to be discussed instead of the market, economy, or AI?
It's time to bridge the gap! Coming out of an IIT/NIT alone doesn't guarantee a job...it's the other certifications or specializations you have done. For ex: If your year-end project is on cybersecurity you may want to be targeted in your approach, do some research and proactively seek opportunities in the space (who is hiring for the roles I am keen on?), tailor-make your CVs and go for it. The passion to focus on a core subject, and to do everything to get closer to the core subject, that's enthusiasm...
Especially freshers are getting targeted the most. In spite of having good skills the IT market is really bad for freshers currently. Moreover, companies are demanding the experience level of 2 years from freshers which is completely unacceptable and it seems expectations are increasing year by year. In addition to this, the media is trying to add fuel to fire.
Well said! Media should avoid sensationalizing placement stats without proper research, as it causes unnecessary stress. Factors like students opting for higher studies, startups, and the expansion of IITs/NITs significantly impact the numbers. While the economic slowdown and AI are real challenges, a balanced narrative is crucial to avoid misleading conclusions. Great reminder to focus on data-driven insights.
I agree that misleading media narratives create unnecessary stress. It's important to focus on facts, such as many students choosing higher studies or entrepreneurship over placements, alongside the impact of the economic slowdown and AI advancements.
You are right, people are justifying that what they didn’t get was also not a guaranteed job path. We all should not be overly concerned about those 8,000 smart minds who didn’t secure jobs through campus drives, because IITians and NITians have much more in their minds as career aspirations beyond 9-to-5 jobs. Instead of focusing on them, why are we not thinking about the youth for whom a 9-to-5 job actually matters but who are still unemployed? For those who think that an IITian wastes their seat by becoming a UPSC aspirant or choosing a different career path, this perspective doesn’t sound fair. It’s the holistic development of a student at IIT that enables them to manage tasks efficiently, and they will still contribute to the nation’s growth, regardless of the career they pursue. I believe saying the seat was wasted is a very selfish statement. Instead, we should appeal to the government to increase the number of seats in top institutions rather than blaming students for how they use their own earned seat, whether as an engineer, politician, or bureaucrat in the future
I cracked JEE Advanced and have completed 2 paid remote internships from USA—one during my first year and the other as an AR/SDE intern at Snapchat in my 2nd (current) year. From my experience, the issue isn't entirely with IITs themselves but rather with how students align their learning with market demands. The key solution lies in rigorously developing the skills that the industry truly values, staying adaptable, and taking ownership of personal growth beyond the curriculum. Institutes should also evolve their programs to focus on practical, future-ready skills to bridge this gap effectively..!
