"Where is the Black Church?" This question informs Marquisha Lawrence Scott's article "Functions of the Black Church in a Global Society: A Du Boisian Approach," another piece published in the special issue, WEB DuBois: Religion and Social Inequality, of the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion, co-edited by me (Editor-in-Chief) and my esteemed colleagues and leading scholars of social inquality and religion, Sandra Barnes and Cheryl Townsend Gilkes. Bussaja, J. (2024). Shackled Spirits: Historical Origins For Black Lives (Don't) Matter (to white supremacists) & Christianity's Role In Perpetuating Post-Traumatic Slave Syndrome. Available at SSRN 4775476. Abstract: This research paper examines the enduring impact of the Trans-Atlantic war & slavery on Black people by focusing on the inhuman treatment & spiritual dimension of their experience. Drawing from the concept of Post-Traumatic Slave Syndrome (PTSS), the study explores how the legacy of slavery continues to shape the religious and spiritual beliefs, practices, and experiences of Black individuals. The research seeks to understand the role of Christianity in either perpetuating or challenging the spiritual enslavement experienced by African descendants, as well as the ways in which the legacy of mistreatment & denial of basic human rights have persisted today. By examining these aspects, this paper aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the multifaceted impact of the war and slavery on Black people and inform strategies for addressing its ongoing legacies. Keywords: Christianity, White Supremacy, Systemic Racism, Spirituality, Activism Suggested Citation: Breckenridge, Jason, Shackled Spirits: Historical Origins For Black Lives (Don't) Matter (to white supremacists) & Christianity's Role In Perpetuating Post-Traumatic Slave Syndrome (March 27, 2024). A black Jesus would understand and address racial oppression, lament with those that suffer, and acknowledge the existence of structural racism. On the other hand, a white Jesus preaches triumphalism, individualism and antistructuralism, ignoring the importance of justice. It’s no surprise that white churches lose white congregants when black Christians start attending, and bringing in a black senior pastor only exacerbates the problem. To avoid white flight, multiethnic churches often prioritize the comfort of their white congregants over engaging difficult topics. But is that really what the Biblical Jesus would do? ---------THIS IS FOR MY WHITE FOLKS. All are welcome to engage ------ Find yourself scratching your head at the state of the world and how we seem to keep repeating the same mistakes? Wondering how we could possibly be rolling ourselves into yet another Trump presidency?? I highly recommend Robert P Jones's book, White Too Long. It is no exaggeration to say that the future of America will be determined by white Christians. This is not an appeal to altruism, but rather a roadmap of how white Christianity has shaped our country. Jones argues that contemporary white Christians must confront these unsettling truths because this is the only way to salvage the integrity of their own faith and their own identities. This book calls for an honest reckoning with a complicated, painful, and even shameful past. It challenges white Christians to acknowledge that public apologies are not enough—accepting responsibility for the past requires work toward repair in the present.

This Black History Month, let's remind ourselves that standing by silently is not an option when faced with injustice. Let's choose to be the voice for those who are silenced, the strength for those who are weak, and the change we wish to see in the world. Hello Makeda, ReFraming our history: Long before there was history there was African history. Black history began long before Genesis and slavery. Slavery is NOT our history. Slavery is an evil interruption of our history. The after effect of this oppression is a hard lesson but should not become an eternal sentence. SACRED NILE presents the photo evidence of our spiritual inheritance and buried sacred history of faith in Africa before Genesis and slavery. SACRED NILE highlights the African influence on ancient faith development along the river Nile. The primacy of African theological thought is verified by the visual evidence found in this book. SACRED NILE is a photo history book that uncovers the African influence on philosophy, spirituality, and religion. This book examines our foundational history and sheds light on the missing and buried links to our glorious imagination. In our miseducation Black people have been taught everybody’s history except their own. SACRED NILE provides fresh air to traumatized souls. Check out, SacredNile.com to learn more and share. “One of the major dilemmas inherent in the attempt by Black people to break through the cultural aspects of white imperialism is that posed by the use of historical knowledge as a weapon in our struggle. We are virtually forced into the invidious position of proving our humanity by citing historical antecedents; and yet the evidence is too often submitted to the white racists for sanction. The white man has already implanted numerous historical myths in the minds of black peoples; and those have to be uprooted . . . It is necessary to direct our historical activity in the light of two basic principles[:] Firstly, the effort must be directed solely towards freeing and mobilising black minds. There must be no performances to impress whites, for those whites who find themselves beside us in the firing line will be there for reasons far more profound than their exposure to African history. Secondly, the acquired knowledge of African history must be seen as directly relevant but secondary to the concrete tactics and strategy which are necessary for our liberation. There must be no false distinctions between reflection and action . . . If there is to be any proving of our humanity it must be by revolutionary means.” ~ Walter Rodney, The Groundings with My Brothers #BlackHistory #Racism #WalterRodney #StructuralRacism #Politics #Genocide

I'm heartened by the groundswell of support for Palestine and on this final extra day of Black History Month; I want to hold some space with you over some discomfort and anger I have around this support. Specifically the colorism at play in support from us white folk. Let me first say this critque should in no way detract from the need and focus that Palestine deserves. Those speaking out; ask yourself if you were doing the same thing last year? Why have you been silent on the genocide of Indigenous or Black People? Part of the issue is that its easy to see yourself outside of the Palestinian issue, as a keeper of morality and saviorism. When in actuality its more like 'I learned it from you!' There is also the constant bombardment of genocide that creates a sustained anger, vs the insidious ways that systemic racism creates the same outcome though drawn out and more covert. You see a genocide and decide you must speak out, but maybe its because you recogonize yourself in the oppressor, but you also see yourself in the oppressed. You can't believe they would censor or delete accounts! Which means you weren't speaking out and getting banned in the ancient times of the last five years. Im a wee bit neurotic, but one way this has served me is that I always look for ways that a post might be calling me out; if I do the things listed, and it then takes an honest conversation with yourself. #BlackHistoryMonth #Palestine #Black #Indigenous #CamelCase

#EthicalCommentary Too few believe me, when I comment on it, so, let someone else tell the Story. "Black History Month does not teach Real History; it only teaches what happened in the United States America - and skips over the Atrocities, Slavery & Genocide. There is more to History than the USA, that is the essence of a True Story. #TheFoundersDesk #EvolveYourEthics #EducatingEthics #EthicalEducating #EthicalSovialDevelopment #EthosOfEthics #EndBigotry #TheRealStory ☆The Real Story: Black History Month (an USA concoction). The month that promotes Bigotry, Lies and blatant Misinformation. ▪︎ What is the true History of the Nubian Cultures? Let's start with a more accurate details of the Nubian Past. ▪︎ Though the Start Date is inaccurate, the Storyline tells of a People that had crossed the Sahara Desert during the Exodus out of the lower African Continent; the 1st Civilization; the 1st to have a written Language; the 1st to Innovate. ▪︎ They started on the Top, now they are down here!
