Last week at the UN General Assembly, I had the privilege of joining the Leadership Summit by the Watch & Jewellery Initiative 2030, in collaboration with UN Women, the United Nations Global Compact, and the Belgium Mission To The UN. We explored how our industry is advancing gender equality, and it was an honor to share my perspective. It’s disheartening that in 2024, we must still advocate for the importance of gender equality. The urgency for action is clear—declarations are not enough. We need concrete steps and measurable progress, as emphasized by the Watch & Jewellery Initiative 2030, co-founded by Kering and led by Marie-Claire Daveu. At Gucci, we are committed to leading meaningful change across the luxury industry and our supply chain. Being part of this initiative reflects our dedication to building a sustainable and equitable future. To make real progress, men must actively contribute, and women must have equal representation at all levels. The recently adopted UN Pact for the Future underscores gender equality as essential to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Together with industry leaders, we identified actions to accelerate this progress. My thanks to the Watch & Jewellery Initiative 2030 , Executive Director Iris Maria Alexis Van der Veken, UN Women, United Nations Global Compact , and Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo. CALL FOR ACTION- Sign the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs). As you know last week Watch & Jewellery Initiative 2030 was present at Antwerp Facets. On November 27th, in collaboration with Antwerp World Diamond Centre, we organized a leadership forum on Advancing Gender Equality in Our Industry It was an honor to host the panels and fireside chats with incredible leaders from across the watch and jewellery industry: Ahalya Choksi, Deborah Pienica, Didier Backaert, @Eira Thomas, Francesca Manfredi, Olivia Landau. We discussed about how the Watch & Jewellery Initiative 2030 has been working hard on the operalisation of the principles in its members operations. We shared concrete examples on the ground from CHANEL, Gucci, Dimexon Diamonds, Bonas Group, Rosy Blue NV, International Gemological Institute - IGI etc A heartfelt thank you to Karen Rentmeesters, CEO of AWDC for hosting such an inspiring event and to all the speakers, participants, and industry leaders for engaging in this critical dialogue. Thank you for leading by example and signing the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs). Thank you Gaetano Cavalieri and World Jewellery Confederation - CIBJO for supporting us in this journey of advocacy and action. The Women Empowerment Principles guide companies to: Establish leadership commitment to gender equality at the highest levels. Treat all women and men fairly at work, ensuring non-discrimination, equal pay, and access to opportunities. Provide safe and inclusive workplaces, free from harassment and violence. Promote women’s empowerment in supply chains, ensuring access to resources, training, and market opportunities. Implement community-focused initiatives that empower women and girls. Ensure transparency and accountability, tracking and publicly reporting progress on gender equality. Encourage education and professional development to advance women’s career growth. It is time for the industry to step up together. What can we do to start making our industry work for women? o Women have access to decent work, ensuring living wages and equal pay. o Women, including artisanal and small-scale miners and manufacturers, have access to markets. o Women hold executive leadership positions and are appointed to core C-suite roles. o Women are represented at all levels throughout the value and supply chain. Together, we can create a more inclusive, equitable, and thriving future for the watch and jewellery industry. #FACETS2024 #Sustainability #Innovation #GenderEquality #WomensEmpowerment #Leadership #WEPs #AWDC

United for Equality — WEPs signatories meet at the United Nations! 🌍 At the “Forward Faster: Why Collective Action Matters” Leadership Summit during UNGA79 on the 25th of September 2024, leaders from the watch and jewelry industry came together to champion gender equality. Brands like Cartier, CHANEL, Gucci and Pandora were spotlighted and shared how they are advancing on gender equality. At the Leadership Summit, Women’s Empowerment Principles launched Emerging Practices: Advancing Gender Equality in the Watch & Jewelry Industry, a collection of case studies showcasing how 14 companies are accelerating gender equality and women’s empowerment in the workplace, marketplace, and community. 🌐 With the launch of a brand-new case study booklet, UN Women and the Watch & Jewellery Initiative 2030 aim to showcase the transformative power companies can wield in accelerating gender equality and women’s empowerment across the workplace, marketplace, and community. The 14 participating companies range from globally recognized brands to new start-ups, from tens of thousands of employees to hundreds. They trade in a spectrum of precious metals and gems, and cater to customers at all levels of purchasing power. The case studies cover their operations at headquarters as well as in labs, factories and retail stores in five regions: Africa, the Arab States, Asia, Europe and North America. Each case singles out one of the WEPs, although all companies are committed to all seven principles. 📢 Promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment within the industry’s supply chain is essential to contribute to sustainable development and to foster an ecosystem of socially responsible businesses, which is the foundation of the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) established in 2010. The publication shares some common findings and provides a path to action >> https://lnkd.in/gg4qz2wY #WEPs #GenderEquality #WomenEmpowerment #SustainableDevelopment

At Kering, we strive to empower women, not just today, but every day. When crafting tomorrow's luxury, we firmly believe that diversity is a valuable resource. The Group is particularly committed to gender equality and to the development of talented women across all functions and levels of the organization. Did you know that at Kering, 57% of managers are women? From Baby Leave, our gender-neutral parental leave policy that helps women advance in their careers by levelling the playing field and breaking down gender stereotypes, and our community of Inclusion and Diversity Committees worldwide, or Women in Luxury, our internal network to connect and empower women at Kering, we choose to support our female employees in ways that make a meaningful difference. Our commitment to women was recognized externally when we received the Universal Fair Pay Certification in 2023, and when we were listed, for the 7th consecutive year, in the 2023 Refinitiv Diversity & Inclusion Index. And while making a positive impact on women’s lives starts within our workplace, our commitment reaches far beyond it. Since 2008 the Kering Foundation has been combating gender-based violence by supporting survivors, rolling out prevention initiatives and worldwide mobilization. Over the past 15 years, the Foundation has supported 100 organizations providing essential and qualitative care to 1 million women survivors. In 2023, the Kering Foundation extended its long-standing commitment to address violence against children, in particular child sexual abuse. Our Women In Motion program was launched in 2015 with the aim of recognizing, celebrating and uplifting female creative talent across arts and culture. With more than 100 inspirational Talks organized worldwide, paying tribute to inspiring figures and supporting talented young women across 8 cultural fields, the program strives to shift today’s cultural mindset. Does the fashion industry fail on gender equality? Today, on the 8th of March many countries worldwide celebrate International Women's day to acknowledge the achievements of women but also put a spotlight on areas in which women are still disadvantaged. There are many different gaps between the genders that need to be closed, but what about the fashion industry? Let’s look at some numbers: 👚 Clothes, worldwide, are mainly made by women. About 80% of garment makers are women. But not all of them work under good circumstances. 71% of those stuck in slavery are women, garments being the 2nd highest at risk product category. 👩🎓 Over 85% of the people graduating from top fashion schools are women. Still only around 14% of the top 50 fashion brands are run by women. 🚀 There are fewer CEOs in fashion as there are in Aerospace or Finance. 💴 So while fashion is often considered a female topic and women spending 226% more on fashion than their counterparts, the industry remains male dominated. But there is hope 💚 There is a rising number of customers, among both genders, who think fashion brands should be more aware of gender equality and should take actions. Also fashion brands like are taking first steps toward gender equality. Kering for example put gender equality in it‘s three-pillar sustainability plan for 2025. For us, as a female founded and led company, gender equality was one of our cornerstones, when we started to build our company. We believe that gender equality can be a key driver of success and is not only a matter of fairness and social justice. #internationalwomensday #femalefounder #fashionstartup

💛 Iris Maria Alexis Van der Veken is the Executive Director of the Watch & Jewellery Initiative 2030. 💚 Her commitment and dedication to the great and important goals of the Initiative are impressive. During this #interview, I asked her about #Gender. Why is this still on the agenda, and HOW important is it? 💙 Gender equality is one of the 17 sustainable development goals of the UN. -85% of those goals are not on track -There is an intersectionality between #climate #biodiversity #humanrights and #womenrights - The most affected group is often women whenever there is a climate crisis or geopolitical instability. 💛 When it comes to the #luxury and #jewelry industry: 90% of purchases are predominantly influenced by women. Either through #selfpurchase (great, so it means she is economically independent) or otherwise. - We need to think about the most vulnerable groups in #artisinalmining; for example - We also need to be aware that 72% of leaders in #jewelry and #luxury are male, and only 5% are people of color. 💪 CALL TO ACTION: ''We (the #jewelryindustry at large) must seriously integrate gender into a company's strategies and see it as a business imperative.''
