Why make Camp Cherith a priority this summer? A parent was asked why they send their child to camp each summer and if they were going to be returning this year? Her response was; "Camp is not an option - it's a priority. There is nothing throughout the year that can offer to our boys what camp does. I have noticed year after year, it is here that they gain more confidence, get to try things they otherwise couldn't, and are meeting great friends. Even more importantly it has been most significant for their spiritual growth." At Cherith, it is our hope that every child gets a chance to have a Christian camping experience each summer and we want to do whatever possible to make that a reality in 2024. Sure, some will still say: "camp is just a week away from home or a nice break from the kids for the parents." It is that, but it is so much more! Recent research and feedback from parents have found that having a Christian camp experience has been recognized to: 1. improve children's & youth's social skills 2. see young people be willing to try new things 3. help make children healthier by getting outdoors 4. develop leadership skills and healthy independence in young people 5. lead to greater likelihood of staying connected with their faith 6. increase confidence and self-esteem 7. serve as a great place of fun, friends and memories for a lifetime SO! If this is what a young person gets from a camp experience, it makes complete sense why it is a priority for a family to ensure their kids get this type of experience each year! And this is why Cherith has existed for over 70 years - to be an affordable Christian camp in the beautiful Grey Bruce area providing a positive, safe and high quality life-changing experience for the next generation! One of the best things we did was to send our girls to Christian summer camp. It was at camp that they learned to spread their wings – and perhaps even first realized they had them. They absorbed faith deep into their beings. They were pulled, pushed and stretched into new experiences, both physical and spiritual. They have been built into confident, caring leaders and risk takers. They learned the words to funny songs. Even during summers when we took family trips, we still got them to camp. They wouldn’t have had it any other way. My wife and I are now blessed to see our children sending their kids to camp. We consider it a privilege to help invest in the lives of our grandchildren when asked if we could help send them to a Christian camp. It can be expensive to send your kids to camp and I must admit, the expense can be intimidating. But, let me ask you some questions. How much do you spend at your favourite coffee shop each week? How much do you spend on personal entertainment? What ‘bells and whistles’ could you cut back on? I ask these questions for this reason. What eternal benefit do we get from the ‘cost’ of the above? Perhaps we should shift our focus from thinking of camp as a ‘cost’ to thinking of it as an ‘investment’ - a spiritual investment into the lives of our children and grandchildren. So, let’s shift our thinking away from this is a cost to this is a gain – an investment in the spiritual health of our children Dear parent, if you can send your kid to camp summer after summer, do it. You will not be sorry. Check out www.campcherith.ca

One thing about my family is we are going to get outside! We take our meals outside, take walks before bedtime, family bike rides, soccer in the park while barefoot, watching the full moon by some water, camping⛺️ , and everything else that gets us out in nature. Here are 3 things that you can start doing with your family to strengthen your connect to the most high (nature): 1. Weekly Nature Walks: Dedicate one day a week for family nature walks. Choose different trails, parks, or nature reserves to explore. Make it a routine, and allow everyone to take turns picking the location. 2. Outdoor Family Games and Picnics: Plan regular outdoor activities like picnics, frisbee, or soccer in a local park. Bringing meals outdoors encourages more time in nature and provides a relaxed environment for family bonding. 3. Nature-Based Learning Activities: Incorporate nature into learning by starting a small family garden, going on a scavenger hunt, or identifying local plants and animals. This can be both educational and a fun way to spend time outdoors together. Whatever you do just be intentional and begin to prioritize being outside. What are some things you do regularly with your family outside? 👇🏾 Join our email list for more valuable tips on nature, birth, womb wellness, toxic free living, ancestral wisdom, and raising free children! While many perceive summer camps as spaces where campers learn and enjoy themselves, with counselors merely providing assistance, the reality often reveals a different dynamic. In numerous instances, it's the camp counselors who emerge from the experience having gained profound insights into seeing people and embracing differences, often learning more than the campers themselves. In "Failing to See What They See," Christian Long recounts his transformative experience as a camp counselor at Camp Capella for a boy named Uriah, whose physical and neurological challenges made everyday activities difficult. Uriah found freedom and joy in swimming at Phillips Lake, where his limitations vanished, transforming him into a graceful, boundless being. Long reflects on his initial failure to recognize the profound impact of the lake on Uriah’s well-being and his own role in supporting Uriah's passion. Over the years, Long realized that true education and caregiving involve seeing and nurturing the individual joys and needs of those in our care. He emphasizes the importance of creating spaces where children can thrive on their own terms and encourages educators to embrace and support the unique passions and perspectives of their students, as exemplified by Uriah’s love for the lake. Don’t miss this inspiring read on how summer camps for individuals with additional needs benefit both campers and counselors by promoting acceptance, growth, and mutual understanding. At YMCA Camp Greenville, we see it every day: kids stepping out of their comfort zones, forming lifelong friendships, and discovering the strength they didn’t know they had. But what makes camp such a powerful force for personal growth? It’s rooted in three key areas: Confidence: Camp empowers kids to take on new challenges, whether it’s hiking a mountain, learning a new skill, or performing in front of their peers. Through these experiences, they build self-assurance that extends far beyond camp. Connection: In a world filled with screens, camp creates space for meaningful human connections. From team-building activities to late-night campfire conversations, campers form bonds that teach empathy, collaboration, and the importance of community. Character: At its core, camp is about values. Kids learn resilience when they face obstacles, responsibility when they care for their surroundings, and integrity in how they treat others. These lessons shape who they are and who they’ll become. At Camp Greenville, we’re proud to help children grow into confident, connected, and compassionate individuals. Every adventure, every moment of joy, and every challenge conquered is a step toward their brighter future. 💬 Parents, what growth have you seen in your child after their camp experience? We’d love to hear your stories! #CampGreenville #YMCA #YouthDevelopment #Confidence #Connection #Character #OutdoorEducation
