office policies. The holy grail of corporate functioning. Or, as most of us see them when we start our careers, *stringent, slightly terrifying, and utterly incomprehensible*. Back when I was a fresher, I used to think these policies were designed solely to confuse my 20-something brain. Now, having spent years in the field (and multiple HR sessions later), I realize they’re not here to confuse—they’re here to *control chaos*. And let’s be honest, given how architects thrive on last-minute creativity, chaos is practically our second nature. At R Design, where the majority of us are below 35, the vibes—and not big on following rules. Sure, there are a few over-35 exceptions, but they blend in so well that they might as well be honorary millennials. So naturally, I couldn’t help but wonder: why not have an open-minded, slightly Hogwarts-inspired approach to policies? After all, if Dumbledore could run a school full of mischief-makers with a twinkle in his eye, surely we can manage an office full of creatives without making everyone feel like they’re in Azkaban. Now, don’t get me wrong. With every power comes responsibility (*cue Spiderman theme music*), and policies are here to remind us of this. At the end of the day, policies are like the rules of Quidditch—necessary to keep the game fair, but let’s not forget we’re here to *play*.

Design and construction trends are evolving at an unprecedented pace. As we look ahead, the question arises: what does the future hold for our industry? How can we bridge the gap between what is and what could be? What is the role of leadership in driving transformative change? In the realm of design and construction, sustainability is no longer a buzzword - it is the foundation upon which we must build. Our collective responsibility to protect our planet inspires us to create buildings that minimize their environmental impact. From innovative green materials to energy-efficient technologies, sustainability must permeate every aspect of our projects. As leaders, we have an opportunity to champion sustainable practices, reducing carbon footprints while pushing the boundaries of what is achievable - not as a bolt on but as core in how we deliver. 🌱💡🌍🏗️ But it's not just about the environment; human-centric design is integral in shaping the spaces we inhabit. Buildings should be more than just functional structures; they should inspire, nurture, and enhance the lives of their occupants. By prioritizing their well-being, we can create spaces that promote productivity and happiness. Leaders must champion the inclusion of natural light, green spaces, and flexible work environments to create harmonious settings that put people first. The future lies in striking a delicate balance between high-tech advancements and human experiences. Technology has the power to revolutionize the way we work and live, but we must ensure it complements rather than replaces human interaction. The ability to seamlessly integrate technology into our spaces will empower us to deliver enhanced user experiences while maintaining a strong human connection. Leadership in this context means fostering healthy tension between technology and humanity, harnessing the best of both worlds to create exceptional environments. As we strive to bridge the gap between what is and what could be, leadership becomes even more critical. We must consistently challenge the status quo, encouraging innovative thinking and pushing boundaries. It is our responsibility to foster a culture of sustainability, human-centric design, and technological integration. By empowering our teams to embrace these principles, we can shape a future where the spaces we inhabit are not only sustainable but also nurturing, inspiring, and transformative. A new report from Brivo claims that, while security is a new priority in building design, a mismatch between ambition and reality can lead to spiralling costs. The results of its research into integrated physical security in building design by Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) practitioners claims that despite an increased commitment to “security-by-design” principles, the industry is still spending significant time and money post-build to fix #security issues, risking dire retroactive effects. The report surveyed 800 decision-makers in building design across the US, UK, and the DACH regions. The results suggest that physical security is more important in building design than ever. A decade ago, security was not considered a top priority, but it is now a top three concern—only safety and #sustainability were seen as more important.
