Hey rising VP star, eager Director – Have you been selected to give the closing comments to your organization’s summer interns? Have you thought about what you will say? Have you considered how you will motivate them and instill confidence in them to further engage with your organization as they plot out their next career move? Don’t ignore this opportunity. Consider this story as you ponder your words of wisdom and how you can support your organization’s talent stream and future rising stars. This is not my story. I did not write it. It is a few years old – and yet still relevant today. It’s listed as authored by “unknown” on Brave Girl: “Brave girl, P O W E R F U L! Jordan Chiles was ready to quit gymnastics. She had been passed over for big assignments year after year due to lack of consistency. The environment was toxic, and many in the gymnastics community had written her off. But Simone said, I see you, Queen. In 2019, Simone invited Jordan to relocate from Washington to Texas to join the gym that she OWNS- a safe space with a positive environment. When Jordan arrived, the first thing they worked on was not building her skills but instead building her confidence. Two years later, Simone and Jordan are headed to the Olympics together. [Again in 2024] This is what we mean by lift as you climb. Trophies are nice but the biggest flex is winning together and creating an environment where others thrive too. - unknown”    I know you may be thinking – I’m not an Olympic Gymnast GOAT with flips and moves named after me? It doesn’t matter. ✨ To those summer interns, you are their rising star. You are the person lifting them up, giving them confidence to continue their journey, providing them a positive, safe space to try new skills, and coaching them on their first career steps. Confidence first, then the strategies, skills, and techniques to get the job done. Make no mistake Jordan and Simone are competitors and teammates; and yet there is space enough to be kind and supportive. 🥇 “The biggest flex is winning together and creating an environment where others thrive too.” Lift others up, as you climb. You are a leader when you build other leaders. Share your spotlight, if you have it. Share your knowledge and resources, if you don’t have fame. This is our greatest work to do.   Photo by Kier in Sight Archives on Unsplash
