Are you just hiring other versions of you? 🤔 As a founder, director, senior leader when you are hiring for your business in either a mid management role or a leadership position are you filling your company with more people “like you” or are you really thinking about the bits you don’t like doing to get the best possible person to take that away from you. We are all guilty of it, hiring people that we like that are like us, but 5 versions of you in your business is not going to get things done! When you are thinking about what you need think about the things you always put off (I’ll do that later) make a list of them and build a spec around that! Or think about the things you know someone else could do better! Surround yourself with people who are better than you. ⭐️ That’s exactly what I did when I hired Ellie Tapper & Sarah Platek. For example the idea of a crm implementation makes me want to rock back and forth, but Ellie is in her element! Let’s say I’m not a natural with admin I put it off, now it’s always done because I’ve got an Ellie. And Marketing, don’t get me wrong I love marketing but I’m better front line with customers, sales partnerships relationship building and marketing was taking up way too much of my time. Enter Sarah Platek the queen of marketing and we have a plan (lots of plans) and my business is so much more robust for it, and we are only at the beginning. 'We need a sales person!' is often the first thing I hear from growing organizations. But my response is always: 'What kind of sales person? And how does this hire align with your vision?' You see, hiring isn't just about filling seats. It's about strategic alignment. Every role, from sales to operations, should cascade from your company's vision - that Big Hairy Audacious Vision (yes, I'm tweaking Jim Collins' BHAG here). Think of it as a pyramid: Vision → Mission → Company Goals → Departmental Goals → Role Objectives → Job Description → Right Hire Too often, we start at the bottom. Defining your vision and mission is challenging, deep work that shouldn't be rushed. But when done thoughtfully, it becomes your organization's North Star. Everything else - your goals, your roles, your hires - falls into place with strategic meaning and purpose. It transforms every decision from tactical to strategic. So before you post that job ad, take a step back. What's your vision? The dilemma of a hiring manager. It can be really difficult as a hiring manager if you are not particularly happy yourself and yet you still need to hire a team. I recently spoke with a very talented CMO who has built a team of 10. They love their team and are proud of the massive commercial goals they have smashed - every month they are breaking records. It sounds like a dream come true. But... and there is a but. They are constantly trying to shield their team from the Founder's erratic moods and decision-making. Eventually, the Founder decides that X person is not working out, or the person decides it is not for them. This results in ongoing change. The easy answer is - Get out! And yes, that is an option. However, the hiring manager is managing to perform and handle the founder. They also need the job financially and are enjoying the commercial challenge, even with the bi-product of managing someone very tricky. What it does mean is that it can be very hard to sell the opportunity to a potential new team member. My advice if you are in this situation: 💯 Be honest at the interview with the style of decision-making and don't oversell the opportunity. 😇 🔥 Remember, although most people are seeking a perfect culture, some people can perform and rub along in a chaotic or ambiguous workplace. One person's hell can be another's heaven. 🤝 Contractor or interim are also great options (essentially temp to perm) so they can see if they like the place before making a long-term commitment. #marketingleaders #techmarketing #marketingcareer #marketingrecruitment

Every search is unique. Even when the job title is the same, and even if the role is at a competitor, the nuances of the position, company culture, and underlying business challenges make each search distinct. Take two “Marketing Managers,” for example: One might need a strategic thinker to build a brand from scratch. Another might require a hands-on executor who thrives in fast-paced environments. Add to that the company’s size, industry, team dynamics, and growth goals, and suddenly you’re not just searching for a “Marketing Manager” anymore, you’re searching for someone who can solve very specific problems. That’s why recruitment isn’t about plugging in keywords and crossing your fingers. It’s about understanding the business, the goals, and the challenges driving the hire. It’s about asking the right questions and being adaptable enough to shift strategies when the need arises. Because the perfect hire for one company might look completely different for another, even when they’re in the same industry. This is what makes recruitment both challenging and exciting. It’s also why having someone who takes the time to understand your unique needs can make all the difference.
