Can someone from Worksafe W.A (or Eastern States equivalent ) including current and retired Advanced Riggers (RA), Lifting Engineers, Supervisors in the Construction and Maintenance fraternity, specifically Rigging please explain why trainers need to still teach and confuse students about Gin poles ,Guy Derricks, Span ropes, Flying foxes etc... ?. I'ts not practical anymore, those methods are well Superseded and the inherent Risks associated are not worth it. The Training needs to keep up with the Industry and the variety of lifting equipment available now days makes for a Safer and more efficient Site. To set up most of the equipment as detailed above you will require an Engineers Certificate and input from Safety teams and supervisors and Team members. Good luck. It is my opinion Advanced Riggers should be taught to read drawings, structural steel marking plans and mechanical drawings, Work packs, scope of work , planning. Relevance. Think, when was the last time (apart from cranes) you saw a Guy Derrick, Gin pole, flying fox on site?. I look forward to your feedback

Many skilled craft people are looking for work. Even though there’s not enough labor to go around, I’m seeing a trend for those that possess a specific skill set looking to work with organizations who value their years of experience. It’s apparent that these individuals don’t want to go to a shop environment or even a jobsite where they are performing the same monotonous task over-and-over-and- over again. When it comes to safety, curiosity is as vital as the processes you put in place. This is one of the biggest mistakes that will happen ↓ You'll see a safety person out in the field with a checklist And they're gonna go down to do an inspection or see what kind of work is being done by say... a welder or… a pipe fitter Even though that safety person has never been a welder or a pipe fitter in their previous line of work. They could have never touched a single tool in their lives and spent every working minute behind a computer... And they're gonna go and tell this crusty old pipe fitter that he's doing things unsafely and how he can do it differently? Or an ironworker? Or a rigger? It could be any trade. Any trade that requires years of on-the-job experience to learn how to do. I don’t think so! When I’m talking about curiosity It’s about understanding ↙ 1. What they're doing 2. Why they're doing it 3. And the way they're doing it That's why understanding the trades is so important in this line of work and it’s one of the biggest things missing from modern safety. You can’t bring cubicle workers to a job site and expect their training to take them the entire way. It just won’t work. Approach with curiosity, not compliance.
