First Student, a North American provider of school bus services, has partnered with the Pontiac School District in Michigan and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to deploy 40 new electric school buses and replace the district's entire fleet of diesel buses. The district secured the funding through the EPA's Clean School Bus Program, with a $9.75 million grant award in November 2023 and another $5.9 million grant award in January 2024. The EPA's Clean School Bus program is designed to help school districts replace existing diesel school buses with zero-emission buses. Replacing just one diesel school bus with an electric school bus helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 54,000 pounds annually. First Student intends to transition 30,000 of its diesel buses to electric by 2035 for improved health and well-being of students and communities. The company will start the deployment of the new buses during the 2024-25 school year. CanaryMedia with a chart on EV school buses. "Which states have the most electric school buses? More students than ever are headed to class on an electric, emissions-free school bus this September. But only a fraction of U.S. school buses are EVs today. Electric school buses are a crucial tool for cleaning up transportation, the single largest source of carbon pollution in the country. They’re also an important public health intervention: Conventional diesel-powered school buses expose children to levels of air pollution that can cause respiratory harm and weaken cognitive performance. Thanks to the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, school districts across the country are now receiving federal funding to swap out their dirty diesel buses for shiny new battery-powered models. To date, the Environmental Protection Agency, which administers this program, has awarded nearly $3 billion to fund around 8,500 EV school buses at 1,000 schools. It plans to spend up to $5 billion when all is said and done." Earlier this month, our we found out that The Arts Based School in Winston-Salem was awarded $345K from the EPA's Clean School Bus Program to purchase an electric school bus. This new program is building a nationwide fleet of electric school buses through a ground-breaking investment of $5 billion to replace existing school buses with zero-emission and clean school buses. So, what's all the fuss about and why is the EPA investing so much money in this? We're glad you asked 🚌 🌍 Electric school buses generate zero tailpipe pollution, allowing students drivers, and the community to be less exposed to harmful diesel emissions. Also, the buses will have reduced maintenance cost and a quiet, clean operation. There's even a potential for fleets to partner with local utilities to feed power back into the grid when buses are not in use and electricity demand is high! Parents and community members: Do you want to see an electric school bus at your local school? #winstonsalem #electricschoolbus #cleanschoolbus
