Sandler rule #35 "if your competition is doing it, stop doing it right now." Just about every single job applicant has learned referrals are the way to get a conversation with recruiters and hiring managers. So if everyone is doing it, what does that make everyone? According to Sandler's rule, we are all the same. So that means, we have to be the pattern interrupt. What can you do to separate yourself from the 10-20 other applicants with a referral?
I completely agree with this - if everyone is being told that having a referral is the way to go and we all do it, it becomes a moot point. I'm still trying to figure out a unique way to stand out and it's not easy because the next new thing that we are recommended to do, everyone else will start doing that as well. How to stand out - luck and timing.
Here's on way to stand out as a candidate-Do your research on the company, provide value and insights that would be helpful and be related to the role you are applying for. Share those insights with people that you are networking with that work at the company
