Women's Professional Leagues Limited agrees new multi-year broadcast deals with Sky and the BBC The Women’s Professional Leagues Limited (WPLL) has agreed the most significant broadcast partnership ever for women’s football in the UK & Ireland following a new rights agreement with Sky and BBC Sport. The new deal sees both broadcasters commit to the Barclays Women’s Super League (BWSL) for a further five years and means that fans can once again watch every match from the top tier of women’s professional football in England live. As lead broadcast partner, Sky will show up to 118 matches, with 78 fixtures shown exclusively across Sky and Sky Sports channels including all matches from the closing weekend of the season. For the remaining matches, 34 will be shared non-exclusively between Sky and WPLL’s YouTube channel, and 7 broadcast on both Sky and the BBC. The Premier League’s unveiling of its £5.14 billion ($6.3 billion) media rights deal for the 2016/17 to 2018/19 period took many by surprise, including Richard Scudamore, then-chief executive of the league, who admitted to being surprised by the deal’s value, representing a significant 70 percent increase over the previous arrangement. While the #PremierLeague hasn’t surpassed the financial terms of that historic deal, it has remained a benchmark for other European football competitions struggling to secure comparable broadcast fees. Rolling over its £4.8 billion (US$5.9 billion) deal with Sky Sports, BT Sport, and Amazon Prime Video for the current cycle in 2021 has kept the Premier League’s domestic deal value relatively stable for the past eight years. #TVRights https://lnkd.in/e8_d3zjh

🤔Which company broadcasts the top 5 European football leagues in each country? What are the trends/dynamics for the European market in 2024? An informative and exciting article on the state of the Tier1 football sports rights. 🗣There are a few key drivers shaping the domestic media rights market in European Football: 1️⃣Limited competition for broadcasting rights in the European market, diminishing the upwards price spiral, unlike the American media ecosystem with many more broadcasters and streaming players. 2️⃣Domestic market saturation has seemingly been reached (e.g. in the UK, a fan might spend around £1000 annually to access all the subscriptions required to watch every EPL game). There’s a cap to how much consumers are willing to spend and the share of wallet you can get from them. 3️⃣Increased competition from alternative forms of entertainment, be that streaming services, Social Media, YouTube, etc. Source: https://lnkd.in/dpSTsQdQ

What does the new broadcast rights deal mean for women's football? First, let's pick out the key factors of the deal: ALL 132 games in a WSL season live either on television or online. - Sky Sports have been given up to 118 live WSL matches per season. - BBC has committed to showing up to 21 matches per season. - Remaining matches not selected will be shown live on YouTube. - More Women’s Championship mates will broadcast live on YouTube. - Sky also have the option to broadcast WC matches if they choose to. Players will also be given digital rights to publish their own highlights and clips on their socials, which is great news for players wanting to enhance their brands. The broadcast deal is approximately worth £65-million across five seasons, starting in the 2025-26 campaign. With additional production costs, Sky Sports and BBC have comfortably invested over £100-million into the women’s game. This financial injection means there is an increase of broadcast revenue worth £7m-£8m per season. So, back to my original question – what does this MEAN for the women’s game?? Simply put… 🤑 More revenue on broadcast and increased financial stability 👀 More eyeballs on matches – greater visibility and accessibility 💼 More attractive for sponsors to invest ️📸 Enhanced player brand building This deal genuinely gives me goosebumps. It’s overwhelming how far women’s football has come over the past two decades. 👉 What are your thoughts on this deal?? #wsl #womensfootball #skysports #bbc

⚽ 📺 Should the Euro 2024 and World Cup finals be exclusive to ITV? Tonight, #ITV will be expecting a huge ratings when England take on Netherlands in the #Euro2024 semi-finals. The advertising revenue will have a huge impact on ITV's finances in an era when even it's most popular entertainment shows can only dream of a seven-figure audience. So should ITV get the finals to major tournaments exclusively for the benefit of British broadcasting? I love the #BBC and its world class sports coverage but hear me out. ITV will have more cash to invest in live sports rights and other forms of programming, while the BBC would be able to reallocate its budget to keep more major events on FTA TV. Despite its unfair reputation, ITV's football coverage has been excellent over the past few years. Although I think BBC has the best lead commentator in Guy Mowbray (although Clive Tyldesley and Ally McCoist are my dream team), Mark Pougatch is among the best anchors in the business and the punditry has been a breath of fresh air. The Rs 100 ticket question - Sports industry's basic entertainment value If you're organizing a sports league or event, the fundamental question you need to answer is: Will someone pay ₹100 for a ticket to watch this? If the answer is 'yes,' everything else—sponsorships, broadcast rights, and more—will fall into place. If the answer is 'no,' rework your concept until you get a 'yes.' Remember, it's about entertaining the audience, so consider incorporating other elements beyond the core sport. #sports #sportsbiz #india

Last week, we presented our 2024 Annual Media Update to league and team executives and owners. Arctos Operating Advisor and former head of Fox’s RSNs, Jeff Krolik, and Director and head of Arctos Insights, Zach Baran, reviewed our outlook for the national and local media markets and explored key themes: Cable vs. Streaming, the RSN Death Spiral, the 'NFL-ization' of media rights, and the implications for premium sports rights. But to truly understand today’s media rights landscape is to understand the relative size of the National Football League (NFL).
