Keyword research is the starting point for Google Ads. Without it, you’re likely to fail. However, most people do it wrong. Here’s why: ❌ They only do keyword research BEFORE they launch their campaigns. Pre-launch research is important, but there’s no way you can find every keyword. Plus, you don’t know which keywords will convert or not. The most important keyword research actually happens AFTER you launch your campaigns. ✅ Here’s how to do post-launch keyword research: 1. The keyword match type determines how closely the search query must match the keyword in order for the ad to be triggered. Here are the Google Ads keyword match types: ➡ . Exact Match (denoted by [ ]): The search query must be identical to the keyword, including the same words, order, and spelling. Example: [buy shoes online] ➡. Phrase Match (denoted by " "): The search query must contain the exact phrase, including the same words and order, but can include additional words. Example: "buy shoes online" ➡. Broad Match (denoted by no symbol): The search query can contain the keyword in any order, with additional words, and can be pluralized or modified. Example: buy shoes online ➡. PPC Keyword Research for Google Ads #brief Search queries typically fall into three categories: 1️⃣ Informational: how to, what, when, etc. 2️⃣ Orienting: best, review, compare, etc. 3️⃣ Transactional: product searches, price, buy, etc. Not all searches hold the same value! Visitors from transactional queries have a higher intent to convert, making them more valuable than informational queries. Since you’re paying for every click, it makes sense to target searches with the highest conversion potential. Transactional queries offer the best opportunities for paid ads, while informational searches often see limited or no ads, as Google has found users rarely click on them. Steps for effective keyword research: 1️⃣ Identify seed keywords – Start with phrases describing your product or category. Check your website for page titles, product names, and categories. 2️⃣ Use keyword tools to find search volumes, export relevant keyword ideas, and analyze them later. 3️⃣ Refine your keyword list – Narrow down the options and create ad groups. Branded and product keywords are usually straightforward, but generic keywords will require more time and effort to optimize. What if you have 5 keywords in your Google Ads account all eligible for the same search query? Google's keyword prioritization methodology is complex. Last week, Ginny Marvin wrote an EXTENSIVE article on keyword prioritization and new AI-based relevance matching. Here are my personal takeaways 👇 🔷 Use #Pmax search themes to fill gaps instead of duplicating keyword match types 🔷 Misspellings as negatives won’t block correctly spelled queries, but correct spellings as negatives will block their misspelled queries 🔷 If you have the broad match campaign setting enabled, the broad match keyword will be treated as exact match if it's an identical query 🔷 Exact match keywords are not "cheaper" than broad or phrase match 🔷 Quality score is based on historical impressions for "identical" searches of your keyword, so match type doesn't matter and non-identical searches aren't factored. (I didn't know this❗) 🔷 Good hack to check if a word will be considered a misspelling of your keyword is to perform a Google search and see if it returns "These are results for" the spell-corrected query. Given how many layers there are to prioritization of keywords, this is all the more reason to consolidate your ad account to house conversion data together and improve your chances of winning auctions. I love keyword research - it’s my favourite part of campaign setup and management. I’m definitely old school on this one! Also trawling through the Search Query Report to find gems. That being said it’s also a good idea to use Google Trends to cross reference keywords to see patterns in user searches, product popularity, brand and competitor monitoring. I find the Keyword Tool limited when looking for real time, up to date data. Using Google Trends is also a great way to get a jump on competitors around peak seasons, key events etc….
