Can we come together to make off-grid #energy more #accessible and #efficient? CLASP, RMI and #IEC came together at the #StandardsPavilion at #COP29 to discuss how governments, international bodies and regulators can work together to accelerate meaningful change in the emerging future of energy access. “Standards could be the start of the conversation in the same language to help in building the capacity for local communities and services.” shared Wini Rizkiningayu - Principal, Global South, RMI. A huge thanks to her, Bishal Thapa - Senior Director, CLASP and Vimal Mahendru - IEC Vice-President and Chair of the IEC Systems Committee on Low Voltage Direct Current (LVDC) for the insightful conversation and to Matthew Doherty -Senior Advisor and Officer for the IEC Global Impact Fund for moderating the session. Explaining why access to energy is so important, the speakers highlighted: ✅How can access to energy be a tool to promote social justice? ✅The unique energy challenges in Southeast Asia ✅History of the IEC LVDC standards and how they are serving as the foundation for rural electrification in rural India ✅How are standards developed and how the IEC works to ensure that all voices are heard? ✅How can advocacy addresses gaps in standards development? ✅Need for certification and conformity assessment to ensure off-grid solutions are implemented well. 🤷 What can we do? “Get engaged. Get involved with the standardization process to drive quality infrastructure. Nothing will change unless you make it personal - make climate action a personal mission.”, as Vimal Mahendru put it. By having the vital discussions around standards at #COP29, we want to help climate decision makers gain the tools they need in delivering sustainable solutions across borders. 1dWish I'd been there to hear this - deep topics and far-reaching solutions covered, well done! IEC foundational work is now being extended to address power quality challenges of public grids in Global South economies (TC8 WG11) - one of the gaps you mention that inhibits social justice, affecting South East Asia, India and many more. But the IEC working group needs more expert advocates for those impacted, which number over one billion across the Global South. Please get in touch if interested. I'll catch the playback of this session. Thanks to participants.
