JAKARTA – Indonesian government aims to accelerate development of a carbon capture and storage (#CCS) industry to help fight climate change and is confident the next administration will continue the push, a senior official said on Wednesday. #Indonesia is keen to use hundreds of gigatonnes of storage capacity in saline aquifers and depleted oil and gas reservoirs to store carbon dioxide, tapping demand from countries in eastern Asia looking to curb carbon emissions. I am happy to share our new published paper "Indonesia’s contribution to global carbon flows: Which sectors are most responsible for the emissions embodied in trade?" appeared in SPC (2024) 48: 157-168 Authors: Edi Iswanto Wiloso, Adisa Ramadhan Wiloso, Arief Ameir Rahman Setiawan, Joni Jupesta, Kai Fang, Reinout Heijungs, Futu Faturay https://lnkd.in/gnHQ-DZ2 Motivated by recent developments in global carbon policies, such as the carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) in Europe and carbon pricing in Indonesia, this paper elaborates on CO2 emissions embodied in products entering and leaving Indonesia and identifies carbon-intensive sectors responsible for carbon leakage. This was performed by using global multi-regional input-output analysis and consumption-based accounting (CBA) - production-based accounting (PBA) ratio. In 2016, the annual CO2 emissions embodied in Indonesia’s exports and imports were 114 and 95 Mt. CO2, respectively. Considering final demand only, these values reduce to 32 and 22 Mt. CO2 or 0.9 and 0.6 % of total CO2 emissions in global trade, respectively. The electrical and machinery sector makes up the most CO2 emissions in Indonesian exports. In terms of per USD, metal products and petroleum, chemical and non-metallic mineral products are among the most carbon-intensive sectors, thus likely to be affected by the CBAM policy. Furthermore, Indonesia’s emissions under CBA were slightly lower than PBA, indicating that minor carbon leakage occurred in 2016, but this is subject to uncertainty. Assessing the relative CO2 emissions of various economic sectors is suitable for manufacturing goods whose processes are typically dominated by fossil combustion. However, this is not the case for the agriculture sector as its carbon footprint values are underestimated due to the exclusion of land use, land use change, and forestry emissions. Overall, our findings can serve as a baseline to further explore how a transition towards a low-carbon economy in Indonesia could improve global-trade carbon balances.

IPR in collaboration with Kaya Partners latest briefing looks at the role of Nature-based solutions for climate arising from the land and agriculture sectors with a lens on Brazil, which has massive NBS potential (10% of global). Recent trends in private sector financial flows and large announced funds suggest that Brazil could succeed in shoring up needed investment over the long term and offer potential models for the globe. However, concessional finance and catalytic capital will be essential to de-risk and accelerate. To implement NBS solutions for climate, an estimated $1.6 trillion will be required globally by 2050. If private and public sector initiatives fail to mobilize sufficient resources, large-scale government-to-government funds may need to intervene.

Almost four years ago, we published the Roadmap for the Integration of Sustainable Energy and Transport in Small Islands. It has become one of APEC's most downloaded reports. As a first component in the design of island sustainable #energy and #transport transition planning, we suggest the drafting of a stakeholder-oriented #SustainableMobilityPlanforIslands (#SMPI) that entails a groundwork phase, strategy development, and the design and implementation of concrete transformative measures. SMPIs rely on the #AvoidShiftImprove (#ASI) framework, a comprehensive strategy enabling a deep transition of mobility to sustainable technologies and practices. #EVs powered by #renewables is a key component of the broader set of ASI measures. As a second component in the design of island sustainable energy and transport transition planning, we suggest the application of the #MultiCriteriaDecisionMaking (#MCDM) approach that allows policymakers to select the most beneficial energy and transport integration scenario for their island based on specific criteria of high relevance to them. Since the APEC roadmap, we have intensified our engagement with islands in the #Pacific and across the #Caribbean. Much like politics, all energy and transport is local. Ready-to-implement island roadmaps need to consider the geographic, resource, political, social, economic and environmental situation of an island. They need to be designed specifically for, and in, each locality. The APEC report provides the rationale for a swift and ambitious transition and presents two tools for the design of location-specific roadmaps. Big news for methane transparency in SE Asia as Pertamina, the NOC of Indonesia, joins OGMP 2.0 💡 The Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 is the UN Environment Programme's flagship emissions monitoring and mitigation programme.    Companies that join OGMP 2.0 commit to advance measurement-based emissions reporting and set firm targets to reduce methane pollution. 💪 NOCs like Pertamina have a crucial role to play reducing methane emissions. Collectively, they account for half of today’s oil and gas production and two-thirds of proven reserves. OGMP 2.0 provides a powerful framework for companies to scale accountability and transparency, and currently covers 40% of global oil and gas production.
