New research reveals the dangers of indoor air pollution caused by gas cooking. CLASP is supporting the European Commission and the United Kingdom Government in updating policies for domestic cooking appliances to ensure that safer, cleaner electric cooktops are available in Europe, to protect people and planet. https://lnkd.in/gVXRTuJH #CookCleanerEurope
🚨 New Policy Paper: Understanding the Public Health Impacts of Gas Cooking in Europe. We’ve just taken a major step forward in understanding the public health risks associated with gas cooking. A recent health impact assessment conducted by Universitat Jaume I provides important insights into the scale of the issue: gas stoves in European homes may be contributing to approximately 36,000 premature deaths annually, with estimated economic costs of €143 billion. This research highlights the need for attention to the link between gas cooking and indoor air pollution. Studies have consistently shown that households using gas for cooking experience indoor air pollution levels that often exceed World Health Organization standards, with elevated concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO₂). Children are particularly susceptible to the negative health effects of indoor air pollution, with new estimates suggesting that hundreds of thousands of children may be experiencing asthma symptoms linked to gas cooking. Our policy paper offers concrete recommendations to address this issue: 💠 Phasing out gas cooking appliances that do not meet safety standards 💠 Utilising the Social Climate Fund to support a just transition to cleaner cooking alternatives 💠 Raising public awareness about the health risks associated with gas cooking 💠 Supporting the creation of an EU framework on indoor air quality This transition is crucial not only for improving public health but also aligns with the EU's broader goals on air quality, energy transition, and fossil fuel phase-outs. This paper seeks to raise awareness about the importance of addressing the public health impacts of gas cooking and promote a cleaner, healthier future for all 🌍. ☀️ Off-grid solar technologies bring essential, life-changing appliances to millions of people worldwide living without access to a power grid. Our research with Efficiency for Access shows that more than half a billion people still need access to this solar technology. There is also a significant market opportunity of $58 billion USD for off-grid solar appliances like fans, water pumps, refrigerators, and grain mills. Today at #COP29, CLASP’s Bishal Thapa will discuss the challenges and opportunities to close the clean energy-access gap in a session hosted by IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission), on making off-grid energy accessible and efficient for all. If you’re at COP29 Azerbaijan, join us for this discussion: ➡️ Making Off-Grid Energy More Accessible and Efficient 📍 Standards Pavilion, B15, Blue Zone 🕓 12 November 2024, 16:30 – 17:30 Find events that CLASP will be at: https://bit.ly/3YNRBEy
