Hume City Mayor Cr Naim Kurt has teamed with four mayors from Melbourne's Northern Councils Alliance (NCA) to call for better transport options. Investment in our northern rail is needed to resolve critical limitations on train services in Melbourne's northern communities. Effective train networks will alleviate congestion on key roads, support current and future communities to access jobs and essential services, improve social connection and reduce climate change emissions. That's why Cr Kurt and the NCA are calling for the duplication and extension of the Upfield Rail Line. This move will improve frequency, remove ongoing constraints, and increase capacity, frequency and reliability for Hume residents as well as those in the Mitchell Shire, Merri-bek and Whittlesea. Not every Minister can answer every call on a House of Commons Petition. I have to applaud the Honourable Minister of Transportation, Pablo Rodriguez, for responding within the legal framework of 45 days today. But is the so called “Honourable” Minister of Crown-Indigenous relations, Gary Anandasangaree, negligent in failing to respond to the first point of the petition on the last day today? "1. Work with dedicated resources and with a nation-to-nation approach to reconcile and resolve long-standing First Nations’ concerns with certain sections of the Island Corridor." The Minister of Transportation cannot answer that question, the question is where is Gary on resolving the issues standing in the way of our future on Vancouver Island? Great article by Calvin highlighting how trees should be thought of as critical city infrastructure, a necessary part of public health and environmental protection, and be community-centered.

A new chapter in the UK begins today following the general election result. And it will be an important chapter in the unfolding story of climate change and humanity’s response. I know it’s the morning after the night before here in the UK and you’re a bit short on sleep, but I need to remind you about CIHT CLIMATES. It was only a week ago that we announced our exciting new initiative from the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) and over a third of the places for our series of in-person workshops have already been taken. CLIMATES stands for 'Changing Landscapes for Infrastructure and Mobility: Assessing Transport and Environment Scenarios'. In this initiative we aim to explore possible futures in terms of where we might be heading, and use the insights we gain to track back to the present day to determine what our immediate priorities should be. What actions are needed to prepare for whatever the future has to throw at us? We will soon be making available the opportunity for places to be booked for our online workshops taking place in January and February 2025, but in the meantime don’t delay in securing your place as a CIHT member at one of the in-person workshops in the UK: Liverpool – 25 September 2024 Newcastle – 27 September 2024 London – 7 October 2024 Now FULL - Please use the waiting list link to register an interest Cambridge – 8 October 2024 Belfast – 24 October 2024 Cardiff – 19 November 2024 Glasgow – 10 December 2024 Birmingham – 12 December 2024 We warmly encourage anyone who is a CIHT member to consider being part of this exciting journey. #climateaction #sustainabletransport https://lnkd.in/eU2KuhtW 💚💙🤘

This is massive news. I am passionate about our heritage buildings but there is something very wrong with the system when safeguarding old buildings is deemed more important than protecting the occupants and the wider environment. Common sense has prevailed and we will now see far more pragmatic solutions. Bear in mind electricity, toilet facilities, boilers/heating and other modern day necessities weren't appropriate to most heritage properties and yet they have been adapted to accommodate them without destroying their charm and character. Buildings will always need to adapt. Indeed, climate adaptation and resilience requires modern solutions including many, like solar panels, which can be deemed temporary fixtures because when we get to a fully decarbonised grid we may not need all these measures in perpetuity. Thanks for sharing Jan. This is much appreciated as a progressive step in net zero strategies for domestic and non-domestic buildings.

The tide of change is coming. Historic England, the national heritage body in England, will encourage local councils to allow heat pumps, solar panels and insulation for Europe’s oldest housing stock, in new guidance seen as a turning point by climate and building experts. https://lnkd.in/egTv9Bde

On our June 4th Municipality of North Cowichan special council meeting we adopted the Master Transportation Plan following a three-year process that included several rounds of public engagement. The Master Transportation Plan provides immediate and long-term direction for improving our transportation system in North Cowichan and builds on the recently adopted Official Community Plan that recognizes the strong linkage between land use and transportation. The Master Transportation Plan also recognizes our commitment to addressing climate change through reduced transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions and identifies a wide range of future projects that include investments in new infrastructure for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transit. Other projects will include intersection upgrades, new road connections, and new policies and bylaws. Implementation of the recommendations in the Master Transportation Plan will be included in five-year forecasting during the annual budget cycles. https://lnkd.in/g9W7Nw8D

Honourable Minister Gary Anandasangaree ([email protected]) Your attention is required for Petition e-4576 (Transportation) intent on restoring Vancouver Island Rail that was presented to the House of Commons with 7610 signatures on 7 Feb 2024. As the Minister responsible for Indigenous-Crown affairs I expected you of all people would have responded to the petition. To date there is no response from you, and the deadline has come and gone for the 45 days under the law. Minister Pablo Rodrigues cannot speak to your area of responsibility. He did respond, but where is your response the first point of the petition, specifically "Work with dedicated resources and with a nation-to-nation approach to reconcile and resolve long-standing First Nations’ concerns with certain sections of the Island Corridor" Signed Warren Skaalrud, Petitioner. Living and loving the traditional territories of the Cowichan Tribes. This year has seen a change in the funding for peatland restoration in Scotland, and Caledonian Climate has risen to the challenge. A deadline for Peatland ACTION applications looking for funding this financial year was set for the 31st of May 2024 alongside a set of criteria against which all applications would be scored. For the first time in a few years, not all eligible applications will be funded. After a herculean effort by the whole team, we are delighted to say that we submitted applications seeking funding for over 7,000ha of peatland restoration across the length and breadth of the country. We eagerly await the decisions on this funding round and look forward to taking action on these projects later in the summer. Take a look at some of our previous projects here: https://buff.ly/4c0i4SY #PeatlandRestoration #GenerationRestoration #ClimateChange #NatureBasedSolution #NaturalCapital
