Big news directly from COP29 Azerbaijan today! In a panel at the UNGC pavilion at COP29 opened by the International Maritime Organization’s Secretary General Arsenio Dominguez and Knut Arild Hareide, CEO of the Norwegian Shipowners' Association (Norges Rederiforbund) our CEO Andreas Enger, and Sara Edmonson Global Advocacy in Fortescue announced that they have committed to working together to explore the technical and commercial requirements for a green ammonia supply chain for bunkering, from Fortescue’s proposed global portfolio of projects to Höegh Autoliners’ global bunkering. Together we already have strong commitment to reducing emissions in the shipping sector as members of the First Movers Coalition for shipping. In March 2024, Fortescue made history in sustainable shipping when its Green Pioneer became the world's first vessel to use ammonia as a marine fuel at the Port of Singapore. With our Aurora Class, ammonia-ready vessels, the world’s largest and most environmentally friendly car carriers ever built, we are proud to join forces with Fortescue. Fortescue Energy CEO Mark Hutchinson says: “Shipping is a global industry with a global regulator and today the industry is at a crossroads. The ongoing IMO greenhouse gas reduction debate must result in a clear, robust regulatory framework. There are so many transition fuels that are being peddled out there, but they are just a distraction. Only green ammonia can help us reduce carbon emissions in shipping and in turn can help us address the worst impacts of climate change. We need early incentives for hydrogen derived fuels – specifically ammonia for 2030 – otherwise, we are kicking the can down the road and leaving too large a scale up for the 2040s.” CEO of Höegh Autoliners, Andreas Enger, says “Deep-sea transportation is the single most pollutive part of shipping, and accounts for 90 percent of all maritime emissions. Decarbonizing the deep-sea segment is imperative to achieve the International Maritime Organisation’s net zero by 2050 goal for a 1.5C-aligned pathway. Partnering with Fortescue is another milestone on our path to net zero. And a reiteration to our commitment to sailing for sustainability. With this partnership, we are removing carbon from one of the hardest-to-abate sectors, sending a strong demand signal for green ammonia down the value chain. Together, we are making sustainable shipping doable, accelerating the green transition within our industry, and setting a whole new standard for deep-sea shipping.” #SailingForSustainability #Ammonia #Shipping #HöeghAutoliners #Decarbonisation #AuroraClass

Important points on #sustainability from SAP CEO Christian Klein from his post below. In my humble personal viewpoint, there has to be a clear focus in the next years on the needed increase of #greenenergy in order to fulfill the end-to-end sustainability targets as societies. Major industry innovations in #renewableenergy are paramount to make sustainability measures (e.g. electric vehicles) ever more effective from an end-to-end view. Let’s make it for our children and the next generations!

#COP29 is in full swing. And today is a big day for our team at Industrial Transition Accelerator (ITA) / Mission Possible Partnership on the ground and for everyone else who contributed to this day back in our home offices around the world! Today we are launching 4️⃣ major products: 🌏 The new update of MPP's Global Project Tracker, which monitors the pipeline of green industrial projects across 7 heavy #industry and #transport sectors, is live: https://lnkd.in/e2BcSKPH 💡 What we learn from this new update is that, although the global pipeline of projects is growing, the pace at which announced projects reach Final Investment Decision is far too slow. We only have 2 years left to see projects fully approved if we want these green plants to be up and running by 2030! More insights in our brief: https://lnkd.in/ezz_ceSW 🏛 We've been speaking to project developers around the world, and what we've heard again and again from companies, big and small, is that they struggle to approve projects because of lack of #demand for green materials, chemicals, and fuels at the right price point. We urgently need #policy to kick in to scale up green demand! Hence, the publication today of our Green Demand Stimulation Policy Playbook which can help governments navigate different options to unlock $1 trillion private investment in green industry globally. https://lnkd.in/ewFM6mrS 📣 Last but not least, we have joined forces with >50 business leaders and coalitions representing >1000 companies and financial institutions to call on governments of the world to put in place green demand stimulation policies. This open letter has been signed by industry leaders like ArcelorMittal, Ball Corporation, Fortescue, Heidelberg Materials, Holcim, JSW, Ørsted, ReNew, SSAB, Stegra, thyssenkrupp Steel, Topsoe, Vattenfall among others. https://lnkd.in/e3chyEs6 🙏 A big thank you to our delegation in Baku Charlie McLellan, Ed Boyd, Vicki Harding, led by my partner in crime James Schofield! And stay tuned for more details on all of the above!

Shipping must decarbonize now. We said it at the COP28 in Dubai last year. And we are going to keep saying it in Baku at the COP29 Azerbaijan this year. There should be no other future than one where net-zero shipping is a given. We're proud to be joining the Norwegian business delegation alongside DNV, the Norwegian research Council (Forskningsrådet), the Norwegian Shipowners' Association (Norges Rederiforbund), Statkraft ,Aker Carbon Capture, Ruden AS, Norsk Hydro, Equinor Altera, and Hurtigruten at the climate summit next month. Our message will be the same. To truly unlock the potential of a greener future for shipping, we need effective global carbon pricing mechanisms. We, ourselves, have taken bold steps by building the world’s first dual-fuel, ammonia-ready deep-sea vessels. They are set to run on ammonia from 2027 - making net-zero shipping a reality. However, to truly unlock this potential, we need effective carbon pricing mechanisms until sustainable fuels reach price parity with conventional fuels. This year, together with the NSA, we will focus on ongoing negotiations at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for a global CO2 pricing mechanism. A deal is critical to drive the green transition in maritime transport, which is essential for reaching global net-zero targets in the coming years. If you'll be in Baku and are interested in meeting up to discuss, we’d love to connect! Let’s discuss how shipping can play a role in a just and sustainable future. 📸 Image from our pre-cop meeting today in Höegh Autoliners office. Thank you to Innovation Norway, Eli Bleie Munkelien, Hilke von Hoerschelmann and Marianne Karlsen from KLIMA- OG MILJØDEPARTEMENTET for all your valuable input in the run-up to this years COP.

Is Greenwashing the Hidden Anchor Dragging Maritime Decarbonization? 🚢 Maritime decarbonization is no longer an option—it’s a necessity. But as the industry races to meet ambitious targets, greenwashing threatens to derail progress. 🔍 What is Greenwashing? When companies make environmental claims that don’t hold water, misleading stakeholders while real change takes a back seat. In maritime, it might look like: 🌱 Selective actions: Cleaner fuels highlighted, lifecycle emissions ignored. 📊 Inflated claims: LNG labeled “green” without factoring in methane slip. 🛠️ Superficial fixes: Public relations (PR) prioritized over genuine operational change. ⚓ The Impact Greenwashing erodes trust, slows innovation, and harms the environment. In an industry that carries 90% of global trade, the stakes couldn’t be higher. 📜 Regulations Fighting Back 🛡️ FuelEU Maritime (2025): Demands verifiable GHG intensity reductions. ⚖️ EU Green Claims Directive: Penalizes false environmental claims. 📊 IMO Monitoring: Requires transparent, lifecycle emissions reporting. 💡 What Can We Do? 📄 Report honestly: Focus on lifecycle emissions. 🔋 Invest wisely: Prioritize scalable solutions like biofuels, hydrogen, and methanol. 🤝 Collaborate for accountability: Support third-party validation. 🚀 Call of Action The maritime industry must embrace transparency and innovation to ensure genuine decarbonization—not shortcuts. ❓ Is greenwashing the hidden anchor holding back maritime progress? How do we weigh anchor and steer toward real sustainability?

After recovering from #COP29 find here (https://lnkd.in/ebsp_c6P) my reflection from a transport sector lens. While this COP was not expected to be a very ambitious one to progress towards the Paris Agreement, I observed some progress and plenty of opportunities on the sustainable transport side. Never have so many Transport Ministers joined and made statements on their commitment towards walking, cycling and public transport. Many new knowledge products and guidance around transport NDC by many leading international partners were launched. A new Breakthrough Agenda on Avoid and Shift can lay the foundation for more ambitious commitments and the urgently needed implementation. So many opportunities to pick-up on in the coming year for COP30 and the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport starting in 2026. Looking forward to receive your observations and thoughts.
