I asked Gemini if it would approve an ad for Google that depicts a dad asking Gemini to write a letter for his daughter to her sports idol. Here's what Gemini had to say... No, I would not approve an advertisement for Google that depicted a dad asking Gemini to write a letter for his daughter to her sports idol. Encouraging children to express themselves independently is crucial for their development. An advertisement that promotes the opposite sends a harmful message. It could potentially: Discourage creativity and originality: It suggests that AI can replace human thought and expression. Undermine the value of personal connection: Writing a letter is a personal act that fosters emotional connection. Create unrealistic expectations: It might lead parents to believe that AI can solve all their children's problems. A more positive and responsible ad could focus on how Gemini can assist with research, provide information, or even help structure a letter, while emphasizing the importance of the child's own voice and creativity. Would you like to brainstorm some alternative ad concepts?

The digital world is full of noise making it hard to find the most relevant content and even harder to be heard. Here's just a few stats on the amount of noise online: - Over 50 billion web pages are indexed by Google. - The average person views 10,000 ads a day. - YouTube sees 500 hours of video uploaded every minute. - Spotify has 60,000 new songs daily. This sheer volume of noise makes it difficult for people to discover the most useful and relevant information. With the rise of Generative AI, this noise is only set to increase, making it even harder for voices to be heard and for content to stand out. Not only will there be a lot more noise but answer engines such as Perplexity and Google AI overview will reduce the amount of original content that is read so being heard will be even harder. Let me know in the comments if you're finding it harder to be heard or if you're struggling to access quality content easily.

With AI, the Internet evolves into more algorithms and less browsing. A step further looks at how the AI Internet impacts media. I saw it broken out in three phases: 📱 Brand Led Distribution. Pre-Internet the media controlled distribution to the customer. This is the time when today’s traditional media brands were formed with cultural power reinforced over time. Vogue, CNN, the New York Times, Forbes. These brands were built through storytelling, packaging and promotional reputation. 📱 Consumer Led Distribution: The Internet changed distribution because consumers had the ability to pick what, when and how they wanted to consume. Tech platforms like Instagram and Youtube are intermediaries. There’s so much more content and algorithms are one way to sort through it. Media can’t compete with the tech platforms with the exception of examples like the New York Times or Netflix. Therefore, media adapts to social platforms, spurring the “traffic” era. 📱 Personalization Led Distribution: The next era is powered by AI. It extracts exactly what you want from a world of info and presents it back as requested. Knowledge on demand. Personalization removes content from context. Signals of trust disappear or become empty signifiers. It gets harder for media to find an unimpeded path to an audience. Trusted brands, direct relationships and expertise matter more than ever. Efficiency or depth. This is where my emphasis on niche, curated experiences comes from. It’s a call back to Kevin Kelly. To make a living as a successful creator, you need only 1,000 true fans. Early adopters willing to give feedback and watch you grow become brand loyalists. The commercial producers are under equipped and ill suited to connect with these fans because they are institutionally unable to find and deliver to niche audiences.

YouTube Reveals New "Notes" Feature to Combat Misinformation: Testing a functionality called "Notes," YouTube aims to improve viewer experience by adding informative context to videos, reminiscent of X's Community Notes. This initiative comes amid misinformation concerns, particularly relevant with the upcoming US election and rising AI use. The feature, initially for mobile users in the US and subject to user feedback, will inform viewers about the authenticity and context of video content. A pilot phase will involve select users, with third-party evaluators and an algorithm enhancing notes based on accuracy and viewer ratings. If successful, "Notes" could become a staple YouTube feature. AI stole your videos. And it's not going to stop anytime soon. Like all new industries, they start almost completely unregulated. Of course they do... how can you regulate something that doesn't exist? But the current AI boom's speed, power, and capital has led to an absolute crisis for creatives. And it all comes down to one question: If you use copyrighted content to train your AI, what rights do the original copyright holder have? We dive into this in the newest 'The Creator Rep' newsletter along with: - The power of building SMS lists - Why should you care about Instagram Notes? - Jobs from Ogilvy Health, Odyssey Entertainment Group, and SwayID.com. - ...and, as always, the dankest memes created by yours truly.
