Body Positivity vs. Tokenism: Is Fashion Truly Inclusive? The body positivity movement has made significant strides in the fashion industry, encouraging brands to embrace diverse body types and challenge traditional beauty standards. But as more brands join the movement, an important question arises: Is fashion genuinely embracing body diversity, or is it merely using body positivity as a marketing tool? The Rise of Tokenism While it’s refreshing to see more brands featuring plus-size models and a range of body types, it’s hard to ignore the feeling that, for some brands, this is just surface-level inclusion. Tokenism is when brands feature a few non-traditional body types to appear inclusive, without making real efforts to change their practices. This creates the illusion of diversity, but fails to provide meaningful representation or long-term change. True Inclusivity Goes Beyond Size True body positivity in fashion means more than just using plus-size models in campaigns. It means offering a full range of sizes in all styles, showing diversity in skin tones, abilities, and gender expression, and making inclusivity a permanent part of the brand’s DNA.
