As a successful people manager in a technical (male dominated) environment; in my experience at leadership roles, it has been my ability take seriously ‘first impressions last’ about people that has helped me to bring out the best out of my teams irrespective of their level, experience and mental/ emotional state. The ability to quickly read people through paying attention to what they say about themselves and their colleagues and their behaviour towards me at the beginning of working together that has separated people who are passionate about their work and those who are just cruising by impressing the new boss. This applies especially to those who are discouraged because they are stuck in their performance because tgey feel unheard. What has been your winning formula?

Most of these skills are important, but how can you trust a candidate who pretends to have one of these skills? Neurodivergent people know that many people will instinctively believe that they have these skills, simply to make themselves feel like they are part of the neuro-normative. Hire neurodivergent people if you want someone to drive change in your organisation. They're born with most of the skills you're describing, sometimes at an incredible level of being able to communicate.

I love a good story.  In reading this series of short recaps about navigating careers and leveraging critical skills, I respected the headline touting 20 proven job skills. I suggest there are 4 at the top, and they build on each other:   Curiosity fuels authentic listening. Authentic listening fuels communication. Communication fuels effective feedback flows. Just wrapped up an insightful session on career management and leadership at Career Thought Leaders annual symposium in Lisbon, Portugal. Among the key takeaways: As employers, it's vital to focus on solutions rather than problems and customize strategies. Here’s a shoutout to the coaches who shared valuable insights. Antoinette Oglethorpe provided a gameplan that was incredibly useful for structuring our approach in coaching senior executives. During the session, Myriam-Rose Kohn, The Dream Job Expert highlighted the importance of crafting a compelling branding statement to convey unique promise of value. It's all about feeling the energy and affirmation of our approach. As part of a retrospective review of our conference up to this point, colleagues appreciated my approach of seeking one nugget from each presentation that resonated and could provide value to my executive clients; I'm now on the lookout for creative questions to enhance my work in coaching executive clients. Stephen Fischer's discussion on scaling up or down and applying content to our practices sparked some interesting reflections. Likewise, Mac Prichard's emphasis on playing to our strengths and focusing on what we do well is a reminder to stay true to ourselves. Gina Riley's insights on running a small business and leveling up with a team hit close to home. Questions around diversifying offerings and establishing thresholds are certainly worth delving into further. My colleagues also drew inspiration from my perspective on evolutionary growth. We don't need to do everything; instead, let's play to our strengths and focus on growth and maturity. Debra Boggs' insights on interview coaching and resume crafting left a lasting impression. Key questions can reveal valuable information: What value do you offer that differentiates you? What risks have you taken that paid off? What are you most proud of and what legacy do you want to leave behind? As we look ahead to the next #CTLConf, I'm excited about the potential for business development modules and exploring different models for delivering value to clients—executives, faculty, and students. Investing in infrastructure to scale and embracing the evolution of our businesses is key (from ChatGPT and Gemini to Perplexity and Claude). Let's continue to learn from each other and innovate in our respective fields.
