What are some effective strategies to proofread your own writing?
Word choice is crucial. Did you choose a word that strokes your ego but makes the reader stumble? Change it. Are you avoiding adverbs? If not, you should. Are you accounting for rhythm via sentence length or syllable count? Is passive voice eliminated? Read your words out loud. If you need to take a breath to finish a sentence, it's too long. Also, periods are your friends. They help organization, pace, and the reader. Last, listen to Elmore Leonard: "If it sounds like writing, I rewrite it."
