Be sure to check our Sight and Life's recent supplement in Current Developments for Nutrition, which seeks to answer the question: how might traditional and novel alternative proteins be harnessed to provide sufficient protein intake for populations in low- and middle-income countries? ⬇️🫘
What key insights can we glean from the latest developments in the global alternative protein market, and how might these learnings benefit LMICs in shaping sustainable and affordable dietary solutions? 💡 Read our latest supplement with Current Developments in Nutrition (CDN) and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health: https://lnkd.in/d86x4MKC The proposed series of articles aims to shed light on the latest developments across the alternative protein market in the last decades and draw learnings and implications for LMICs. We put forward 9 articles which consider major developments, challenges, and questions remaining to be addressed across four different perspectives, namely: 🫘 nutrition 📱 business & technology 🌱 the environment and 🧠 consumer demand and behavior. Sharing the best practices from the global north to vulnerable populations can help shape and develop sustainable and affordable solutions and improve dietary patterns in a challenging context. More importantly, LMICs can learn from other countries’ experiences to adopt and adapt technology and implement regulations such as nutrient profiling schemes and accurate communication guidelines around alternative protein. It is our hope that this series would inspire entrepreneurs, businesses, and scientists to develop evidence-based solutions towards affordable, sustainable, and nutritious diets in LMICs. #AlternativeProtein #GlobalFoodSystems #NutritionInnovation #SustainableDiet | American Society for Nutrition Jacquelyn Bedsaul-Fryer, PhD | Jimena Monroy Gómez, MPH | Kesso Gabrielle van Zutphen-Küffer | Dr Klaus Kraemer | Adam Drewnowski | Nitya Vissamsetti | Mackenzie Simon-Collins | Sulagna Bandyopadhyay, PhD | Wilbert Sybesma | Vivica Kraak | Mansha Kapur | Veena Thamilselvan | Anna Lartey | Resham Talwar | Mathilda Freymond | Kalpana Beesabathuni | Srujith Lingala | Katrin Gradl | Warren Grayson | Tim Finnigan | Hannah Theobald, PhD, RNutr, FIFST | Bahman Kashi | Prof. Dr. Veronika Somoza | Norah Sadowski | Resham Talwar | Edward (Ted) Fischer | Rowena M. | Alexis N. Check out this collection of articles pushed out in a collaborative effort between Sight and Life and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health about the road to keeping our growing population nourished and how the alternative protein landscape may play a key role in food security in low- and middle-income countries. In our article, we specifically asked whether production of alternative proteins can fit into a set of established agroecological principals, which emphasize sustainable farming by working with nature and local knowledge and customs to reduce negative impacts associated with some agriculture practices. We defined alternative proteins as protein sources outside of animal-sourced foods and this involved anything from traditional sources like pulses and legumes all the way to ultra-processed foods like patties produced from fungal biomass or cultivated meat. Read more to see our thoughts on how suitable each of these alternative protein sources are for securing nutrition in low- and middle- income countries. This is last of my publications from my time at Hopkins, which has nothing to do with my PhD research, but I found the topic so interesting I couldn't resist the chance to help author one of the perspectives. I'm grateful for this opportunity and hope others find the work motivating for our future. Thanks for the collaboration: Alexis N.
