Big news for public health and food transparency! Portugal has officially adopted Nutri-Score, joining countries like France, Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Spain, and Switzerland in embracing this consumer-friendly nutrition labeling system. In France, where Nutri-Score has been a success story, awareness of the label has soared to 93%, with over half of consumers reporting that it has influenced them to make healthier food choices. These shifts are making a real impact, with studies suggesting that adopting Nutri-Score more widely across Europe could help prevent nearly 2 million cases of non-communicable diseases by 2050. Think of the lives improved—and the healthcare savings! While we’re still waiting on the European Commission to make a decision on mandatory labeling across the EU, it’s encouraging to see more countries stepping up to prioritise the health of their citizens. I’m excited to share our latest review, led by my dear friend Vânia Borba: "Prolactin's Paradox: Friend, Foe, or Both in Immune Regulation?" https://lnkd.in/dryGJUVJ This review explores prolactin’s complex dual role in immune modulation, with a particular focus on its implications in autoimmune diseases. Here are some of the key takeaways from our work: 1) Immunomodulatory Duality: Prolactin exerts both immunostimulatory and immunosuppressive effects, regulating immune cell proliferation, differentiation, and function. It modulates critical signaling pathways like JAK/STAT, PI3K/Akt, and MAPK, particularly affecting T cells, B cells, and macrophages. This duality challenges our understanding of prolactin’s role in maintaining immune homeostasis. 2) Prolactin and Autoimmunity: Elevated prolactin levels are implicated in the development of autoimmune diseases like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Prolactin affects a broad range of immune cells, including: - T cells: Increases secretion of TNF-α, IFN-γ, and IL-2, while impairing Treg cell function. - B cells: Promotes the survival of autoreactive clones and enhances the production of IgM and IgG antibodies. - Macrophages: Increases reactive oxygen species and pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β, IL-12, and TNF. Prolactin also influences natural killer cells, thymocytes, and dendritic cells, each responding differently, adding to the hormone’s complex immune regulatory role. 3) The Role of Macroprolactin: Macroprolactin (prolactin complexed with immunoglobulins) and prolactin-autoantibodies complicate the evaluation of prolactin’s biological activity. Macroprolactin can cause hyperprolactinemia without corresponding biological effects, as these large complexes are often biologically inactive. This obscures the accurate measurement of bioactive prolactin, adding complexity to the diagnosis and management of related autoimmune diseases. Our review emphasizes the need to understand prolactin’s context-specific effects to develop therapies that harness its immunomodulatory potential while minimizing adverse outcomes. Can you believe in 2017, non communial dieases accounted for the stats below! We need to be part of this change, within the EU. From these dieases cardiovascular diease accounted for 43% of total mortality 3.8 million deaths, cancers accounted for more than 23% of mortality (nearly 2 million deaths) chronic respiratory dieases for 4% of mortality (just under 400,000 deaths) and diabetes by 1.6 by almost (140,000 deaths). Overweight and obesity affects almost 60% of adults and is a common problem affecting 4.4 million children under the age of 5 years of age representing 7.9% of all children In this age group. We need to be part of this change!! Do you agree?? As part of its farm to fork strategy, the European Commission (EC) has announced its intention to introduce a harmonized and mandatory Front-Of-Pack Nutrition Labeling (FOPNL) in the European Union (EU) by the end of 2022. The European Commission is currently considering several types of FOPNL to create a harmonised labelling system among all member states. The report “Why the EC must choose the Nutri-Score nutrition label – a public health tool based on rigorous scientific evidence – as the harmonized mandatory nutrition label for Europe” is a scientific contribution from European scientists and heath professionals explaining why they support the FOPNL Nutri-Score to be chosen as as the harmonized mandatory nutrition label for Europe. In the UK we are one of the highest consumers of ultra-processed food (UPF) at 57.8% of total energy intake increasing risk of obesity by 90% and substantially increasing risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and dementia. This is due to high energy density, poor nutritional quality (high in refined carbs/unhealthy fats, low in fibre/protein), food additives and altered food matrix affecting gut microbiome and endocrine disrupting chemicals in packaging. The Hidden Dangers of Ultra-Processed Plant-Based Foods on Heart Health and Mortality. A recent (2024) study from the UK Biobank that involved 126,842 participants over a median follow-up of 9 years assessed cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk related to plant-sourced and animal-sourced foods. The foods were categorised by their processing level and the findings reported that for every 10% increase in plant-sourced non-UPF consumption was associated with a 7% lower risk of CVD and a 13% lower risk of CVD mortality. Conversely, plant-sourced UPF consumption was linked to a 5% increased risk of CVD and a 12% higher mortality risk. Additionally two (2023) studies presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress reveal that ultra-processed foods (UPF) significantly increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, heart attacks, and strokes. One study followed 10,000 Australian women for 15 years, finding a 39% higher likelihood of developing high blood pressure among those with the highest UPF intake. The other study, analysis data from over 325,000 people, showed a 24% increased risk of serious heart events for those consuming the most UPF. These foods, are high in salt, sugar, and additives, with the processing itself being harmful. Just a 10% rise in UPF calorie intake was found to correlate with a 6% increased heart disease risk. These findings emphasise the importance of recognising food processing's role in achieving favourable cardiovascular and other health outcomes, even within plant-based diets.
