For today's #TBT, let's revisit a success story from last year: when Benan Akdag and GPS Retail found each other with a little help from us. Benan wasn't just looking for a Warehouse Manager role, but a place to belong. Meanwhile, GPS Retail was on the hunt for a leader who would fit seamlessly into their company culture. Their warehouse needed someone to lead their team, streamline daily operations and navigate them through their busiest season. They required someone hands-on and, most importantly, a leader who could integrate effortlessly into their close-knit team. Our Business Development Manager at the time - Bianca Noble, met with several candidates, but Benan was the one who stood out. His extensive experience, caring personality and insight into making improvements won GPS Retail over. The rest, as they say, is history. If you're on the lookout for the ideal candidate to join your team, don't hesitate to reach out. Our Recruitment Specialists will work with you to create a tailored hiring solution that aligns with your business needs. Hey network, happy Thursday! Settle in, let me tell you a story. Storytelling in the workplace is so important and I'll try not to waffle too much, but please bear with me. The best part of three years ago, I was in supermarkets, working a job that I liked, but had outgrown. It wasn't challenging me anymore and I was exploring what my next step looked like. Back then, it was to learn the role of the Store Support Manager and while I remained in my current role, I started picking up extra tasks, helping run the store and learning as much as I could. Then one day, out of the blue, my Store Manager called me into the office. As is human nature for most of us, I worried about what I had done wrong and was a little bit terrified as I met her for a chat. My Regional Manager had heard about an opportunity for a 3-6 month secondment into our Talent Acquisition Team, supporting during the covid recruitment uplift and he thought I might like a crack. My Store Manager asked if I'd like to apply, I thought about it for about 2.7 seconds, then agreed to go for it. A day or two later, I was speaking with the National Operations Recruitment Manager - I don't remember much of the conversation if I am to be honest, it was my first interview in years and I was pretty nervous! - but she was warm and welcoming and on my birthday nearly three years ago, I joined the TA Team at Coles. I spent almost a year recruiting for Store Team Members, then another opportunity arose to support the Retail Leadership Team. Again, I threw my hat in the ring with the support and encouragement of my Team Leader, had a conversation with the Retail Leadership TA Manager and a couple of weeks later, I started my first stint in the RL Team. I had my secondment extended a couple of times which I was thankful for, as I had really found my groove and could say, with my hand on my heart, that I loved my job. All the while, I was working to be the best recruiter I could possibly be, being guided by amazing TA Leads in the team, learning from my mistakes, asking lots of questions (some silly ones, I am sure!) and grinding day in, day out. I had one goal in mind and I was laser focussed - becoming a permanent member in the Retail Leadership Team. Guess what? My dream has now come true and I could not be happier if I tried. I saw a LinkedIn post some time ago with the, 'fake it til you make it' quote crossed out and replaced with, 'face it til you make it.' I faced it every single day and I have finally made it. I sort of feel like the little engine that could. So I guess this is a very long winded way of me saying to you - don't give up. Set your sights on that dream job and keep it in your focus. Some days it may seem a little burry or obstacles may get in the way, but do NOT give up. Keep after it, keep chipping away, keep learning, stay hungry, make mistakes, get back up but do not lose sight of that goal. You can do it. ps thanks for listening to my Ted Talk 😉

Retail feels like the underbelly of society. People forget you're a person and treat you however they want. They don't see the person. They just see the uniform. When I used to work in retail/service, I can't tell you how many times people called me names or made big deals out of *literally* trivial things. Working retail/service is HARD. Hiring Managers know this, because we've all been there at one point or another. ALWAYS put those jobs on your resume if you're trying to break out of the entry level.

What's the worst job you've had?? I've done all sorts! Hoisted a ton weight fan up a wall, with a rope, on a ladder, as a teen, with an older guy alongside me. Lucky I didn't die! Retail management 'Hard core' recruitment, at high levels, in different markets, different countries... Order picking in freezer conditions Mail sorting on double night shifts in the summer hols...6pm - 6am BUT....BUT....the very best of all, was segmenting oranges for M&S, ALL NIGHT....in cold store conditions. You know...the M&S 'not just' fruit salads. Well it was that. Minimal pay, crappy conditions, hair nets, wellies etc. We left that single shift, went home, thawed out in a steaming hot bubble bath and NEVER WENT BACK! That was undoubtedly the winner. How do people do it? Anyway. What was your worst job? #work #grafter #nightmares
