Is it just me, or do we all secretly wish our kids would believe in their limitless potential despite the confines of our modern world? Came across Barbie's latest campaign, "Give Limitless Possibilities," recently. What stood out was the emotional desire of parents—they want their kids to be confident, self-expressive, and endlessly curious. Imagine this: Barbie dolls symbolizing feminism instead of the age-old stereotypes. It's akin to McDonald's selling kale smoothies. Intriguing, right? Barbie’s campaign cleverly uses diversity, featuring kids of all genders, abilities, and races. They’re not just dolls; they’re reflections of the world kids see around them. For marketers, this means our stories need to reflect shared humanity and avoid superficial gimmicks. Rebranding is no small task, but it addresses the deeper desires and frustrations of parents. This highlights the enduring power of toys to shape imagination and empathy. Dear Brands, First things first, slapping a few vernacular words on a post is not cute. If you want to speak to "us" stop doing it in a distasteful manner. Stop letting middle-aged caucasian men have the final say on the creative. If you hire black creatives, allow them the space to be creative! Care about the people that you are speaking to! Also GIVE BACK to our communities, slapping a branded board at a Tuckshop or Shabeen just doesn't cut it. People in the township are educated, we have bigger fish to fry to get through our day. Also giving us the bare minimum is just a slap in the face which is why we will never be loyal because you don't understand "us". Do better! So what I don’t love is the performative piece of it, which feels like the central piece today. A lot of times, these signs reside in neighborhoods with maybe 2–3 minority families at most — and if there was suddenly a legislative change whereby more minority families could come in at lower price points, even though this might be good for the children of the sign-poster (more diversity in the kids in the neighborhood, playing with people of different backgrounds and perspectives), the sign-posters would go nuts and start whispering loudly about the neighborhood’s value and “getting out.” You can call this NIMBY if you want — it is that — but it’s bigger than that. We live in this weird virtue-signaling, performative era these days. People post this stuff, but when this stuff hits at their kids, their neighborhood, or their ability to earn good income, the sign matters not, and will be in the recycling bin in 15 seconds. Now, is this everyone? No. Many people are good-hearted, put up these signs, and practice what they preach. But for so many, it’s performative bullshit that means nothing. It’s Instagram, but on your lawn. It’s Easter on Facebook, but for passing cars. What’s the ultimate point? To feel like a better person? To showcase the type of person you are? I’m often unclear.

Today was something else. The energy in the office was electric. We had the AdColor Futures in, and let me tell you, seeing such talented people walk through the doors was pure hope for the future. The highlight? A fireside chat with AdColor Founder Tiffany R. Warren and our CEO Kim Getty—two long-time friends who show what it means to build real relationships. After a tough last week, this conversation was everything. It reminded me to actively find and hold onto moments of joy. And this talk? It was one of those moments.
