Three reflections from the week just gone. 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝘆𝘀 / 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸𝘀: I've been vocal before about home much I dislike a Day for something. If it is worth doing. Do it for 365 days or all 52 weeks. That said, it is a genuine shame to also see corporate hijacking of these things, especially awareness events that have their routes in a community and then get swallowed up into corporate marketing, and lose all the authenticity and integrity they had. I feel for the original founders of these things watching all their good dissipate. Embedding the values into daily operations, feels more genuine than a once-a-year spotlight that feels more like a marketing ploy than a real commitment. 𝗘𝘅𝗵𝗶𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘃𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀: Nothing fills me with dread more than a thinly carpeted exhibition hall with the overbearing background noise of too many things merging into one. Surely people don't go to these things and expect to see a room full of SaaS products they've never seen before? They're beamed into by inbox daily. And there is nothing worse than jaded stand-dwellers who "had a few" last night. Is that really the impression you want from a supplier? Give me a conference with peer-reviewed talks and presentations where the object is to learn rather than sell anyday. I'm definitely team substance over sales pitch. 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀: And on a positive note, just to prove I'm not completely grumpy, we're continuing to see an uplift in demand for European contractors, especially in Nederlands and Belgium. Anything can be reversed engineered and if we need to find “soft” markets with huge rewards we will do that. 3. Be prepared to cheerlead several projects and take the back seat. Make the most of IBM ecosystems and learn every facet of their subsidy divisions. 4. Get a passport 5. Have fun in a dynamic team that can multi-task projects and yield returns for shareholders. 💡 "Shoot less and aim more." It was this random comment I made some time ago in a post about creating specific CVs for job offers. I thought about this situation and came up with some ideas. . . . Don't be like me who threw my resume at every junior Data Analyst/Engineer role in Brazil, Netherlands, Ireland, the United States, Canada, United Kingdom (yes, I was doing that). Put your foot down and analyze: "Which positions do I really have a chance of winning?" Your time is precious, some roles take almost 30 minutes to apply for, don't do this automatically, check the description to see if you have the qualifications for it. You don't need to be an expert in what you're asking for, almost no one has all the qualifications for the job, but don't be the person who applies for a job asking for experience in Azure and you have an AWS certificate in your hands. Some day you will have a "general" cloud experience, but not now. ✅ This seems so obvious, but I frequently catch myself wanting to grab every possible opportunity in the world, only to lose the one I stood a chance of getting, just because I haven't invested properly in it. One of our mentees secured a Data and Technology analyst role yesterday. This role wasn’t advertised anywhere… the only reason she got it was because she reached out to a 20-person company in Melbourne that happened to be hiring at the time. From the outside, seems like dumb luck, right? Not when you consider the only reason she got lucky was because she was running around creating opportunities for herself. The truth is, hiring is messy. It obviously depends on skills, but it’s also shaped by factors like timing, connections, and visibility. Things like: - Who the hiring manager thinks of when a role opens up. - Who shows up at the top of their LinkedIn search results. - Who gets referred by someone they already trust. So yes, you do need some luck to get hired. And the only way to find that is to continue upskilling, applying, networking, and reaching out to companies.
