Enrollments increased….” “In 2024, Canadian universities are facing significant financial challenges……” What has changed so suddenly for these major institutions?….pandemic driven technology adoption …(students now can learn things online from a university anywhere)…government policies……globally education institutes are catching up and are competitive at much lower cost?? Companies like Tesla are ignoring the degrees in their hiring frames….they ask talented people to prove their worth through their work. AI in Business SCALING UP IS HARDER THAN PROMPTING Over the past 12 months I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with various organizations — from pharmacies, food brands and construction groups to banks, schools and management consultants — on how to adopt and make the most of generative AI in their daily work. It starts to feel a bit easier once you learn how to prompt, but scaling up the benefits to the whole organization brings a whole new range of challenges. Here’s a structured strategy to adopt and accelerate AI which seems to be working well: 1. Name a Chief AI Officer: Ensure top management is committed to AI adoption by appointing a dedicated leader to drive the AI agenda. There are many advantages in having this person report to the CEO and work across all departments and business operations (not just IT). 2. Empower Teams: Subscribe to essential tools and provide comprehensive training for employees, building a knowledgeable and skilled workforce. It is likely that several employees are already using these tools without proper guidelines and protections. AI adoption requires a good mix of top down and bottom up. 3. Define Usage Policies: Establish ethical, policy, and oversight principles for the responsible use of AI, aligning deployment with organizational values and regulatory standards. Company culture plays a much bigger role in AI adoption than most people anticipate, from the biases in the company's data sets to the way people address their new AI assistants. 4. Start with Pilot Projects: Test AI in specific use cases—such as bots, content creation, and automation—to demonstrate value and impact, fostering broader acceptance within the organization. Encourage and incentivize your employees to share everything they are experimenting with and what they are learning. 5. Develop Data Infrastructure: Gather, organize, and prepare high-quality data to feed AI systems effectively, ensuring accurate and reliable outputs. Do not underestimate how much human effort must go into cleaning up your data. 6. Reformulate Processes, Products, and Services with AI: Expand both internal and external use of AI across the entire organization, driving innovation and enhancing operational efficiency. Many processes will need to change, as will key performance indicators and quality control mechanisms. Most of all, the entire work force will need to develop a whole new range of skills and work habits, many of which are hard to predict. It is still early days, but one thing is for sure: the opportunities for generative AI to help people and organizations get things done a lot faster are very real and abundant. Nonetheless, scaling up AI effectively and responsibly across entire organizations is hard and will likely keep us busy for many years to come. It was great to gather last night at Deloitte's Technology Fast 50 celebration where I was a guest of fellow Innovation Governance Program cohort member and Fast 50 leader Anders McKenzie. Wonderful to reconnect and/or meet in-person with the Council of Canadian Innovators | Conseil canadien des innovateurs team members Skaidra Puodžiūnas, Gabriella B., and Patrice Oliveira. There was a fireside chat with Anders and PointClickCare's Founder and Executive Chair Mike Wessinger who shared his insights on bootstrapping a new startup, raising financing, focusing on the right markets. Key insights for me were: - don't capital-constrain your business by getting financing too late, and balance with retaining control - don't just chase financing, find the right people to have around the capital table, which means ones who are additive, are the right fit for you, and provide access to the right network - the two most important pieces of advice he gives to aspiring entrepreneurs - (a) focus on one thing, not the many many things, and (b) find true product-market fit for that thing. He also, without prompting, gave an impassioned plea to governments to be more supportive and enabling for Canada's tech, innovation and entrepreneurship sector. Yes, this was driven, at least in part, by the recent changes to the inclusion rate on the capital gains tax (cited as hostile to business) but what came through to me was his love of the country and desire to enable us to create the conditions that will allow us to grow companies here, with all the benefits that come from that. "Just Do It" As a professor at Algonquin College, I see amazing business ideas spark in my students' minds every day. But here's the thing: an idea alone won't get you anywhere. It's the action you take that truly matters! Most students never launch even though we tell them to start NOW....sad face. Think of it like this: your idea is the recipe, but action is the fire that cooks it to perfection. No flame, no delicious dish! So, how do you turn up the heat? Break it down: Don't let that big goal intimidate you. Set smaller, bite-sized milestones. Consistency is key, even if it is only 10 minutes a day. Time is of the essence: Give yourself deadlines. It's amazing how a little time pressure can boost productivity! One of my mentors would say, "You need a burning plank", meaning that you need to find out what motivates you and use it to fire up your action. Find your Yoda: A mentor can provide invaluable guidance and support. Network, network, network. Connect with fellow entrepreneurs. Sharing experiences and ideas can be incredibly motivating. I just saw a great post on the importance of mentors by @Aydin Mirzaee. (wish I knew how to link to people in Linkedin posts...lol) Embrace the stumbles: Don't fear failure. It's a stepping stone, not a roadblock. When I look back on the success I have had in my life and the success I have seen with others, it is due to the willingness to try and to fail. Remember, the most successful entrepreneurs are the ones who do, not just dream. Int'l student enrollment has dropped by 45% in Canada, this is not an overstatement. We all know the int'l higher education market is a critical economic driver, and this decline poses huge risks.
