🤔 How can we support young people to engage in the General Election? Youth workers in YouthLink Scotland webinar this afternoon had lots to say about the practical challenges of supporting young people to engage in the GE2024 (short run-up; busy time of year with end of term/transitions/holidays), but also that there is a real disconnect between politicians and young people. Ultimately, we have to ensure political spaces are open and welcoming to children and young people. Beyond the invaluable contribution they have to make to politics, children have a right to be heard and taken seriously on everything that affects them. Youth work can provide a safe space for talking about issues that matter to children and young people and work with them to advocate for change. 🆕 Info sheet on youth work's role in political literacy, including signposting to great resources that can be used by youth workers https://lnkd.in/e6GGiHbe

🟣 The next General Election is in two weeks. Foróige has developed an Election Manifesto to highlight the importance of youth work and the need to involve young people’s voices in shaping the future. Our vision is for every young person in Ireland to have access to youth work. Young people are not just the citizens of tomorrow; they are rights holders today and vital contributors to society. As we look toward a new Government, it’s crucial that young people are at the heart of policy and decision-making. Youth work changes lives, unlocks potential, and strengthens communities. Happy youth week! 🎉🥳👏 Tomorrow evening, Olivia and I will be hosting an online hui for youth week. The purpose of this event is to educate young people on how they can weave together their authentic voices to impact the democratic systems that shape our shared future. Every young person’s participation is a crucial part of the complex tapestry of our shared future. We each hold a thread which is our path of action. Every action, in its diversity, is a necessary part of the whole and interweaves with others’ paths along the way. Some young people will be taking the very first step of civic and community participation, which is grabbing the end of their thread – finding something they care about and acting on it. For others, they’re already weaving their section of the tapestry. Our kaupapa is to support all young people, no matter what thread they’re weaving or where on their path they are, to take the next step. Event content Our content is informed by community feedback on what groups like your students want to know about elections and participation. We’ll be breaking down the 2023 General Election, how a vote turns into a parliament with power, and what Parliament actually does. We’ll also discuss how young people can have their say, even in a non-election year, by engaging with politics or by acting at a community level. What to expect This will be a one-hour workshop held on zoom, including breaks. It’s for any young person who wants to learn how to find, use, or leverage their voice. We’ve designed this workshop to cater to all knowledge and interest levels – no prior knowledge required! It is hosted by two of our Youth Advisors, Tori and Olivia (that’s me!). Our facilitation style allows for all participation preferences – you’re welcome to join with your camera off just to listen, although we also love if you want to join in! We’ll hang around afterwards for any questions or chat. If this event resonates with you, we would love for you to come along and if you know someone who may be interested, tell them about it ☺️.
