🔋 The European sustainable battery value chain has great potential. Despite many challenges such as gaps in the EU legislation and insufficient support, lack of investments, and supply chain risks, many battery cell manufacturers are successfully opening gigafactories in Europe. Some of the well-known names are Northvolt, Umicore, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited, Samsung SDI, ACC - Automotive Cells Company. However, Europe has many more strong battery cell producers (some fully operational, others on the way of becoming fully operational soon): SVOLT Energy Technology (Europe) GmbH, FREYR Battery, Verkor, Leclanché SA, Tiamat Energy, SOLiTHOR, LiNa Energy, BASQUEVOLT, Liacon GmbH, Miba Battery Systems, FAAM - Energy Saving Battery (and this is still not the full list). Many of these companies are establishing gigafactories that are powered by renewable energy with very low carbon footprint (some have climate-neutral production process) and are on track to become fully operational soon. The next important step is sourcing local battery raw materials. According to an excellent analysis by Transport & Environment (T&E), onshoring the battery supply chain to Europe can decrease battery emissions by up to 62%. Progress in this area is being driven by active and sharp advocates like Peter Tom Jones, Director at SIM2 KU Leuven, Maroš Šefčovič, executive vice-president of the European Commission, and Julia Poliscanova (she/her) from Transport & Environment. The benefits of sourcing local battery raw materials are: ✔ Secure supply sources independent of geopolitical risks ✔ Predictable and competitive prices ✔ Responsible production ✔ Lower emissions from raw material transportation ✔ Lower total battery carbon footprint -> excellent score for the EV battery passport (that Global Battery Alliance is actively working upon) UP Catalyst produces climate-neutral battery-grade graphite and carbon nanotubes within the EU, directly from CO₂ emissions. Our team is always ready to discuss the opportunities to produce climate-neutral anode from locally-sourced raw materials. 🚀 It’s been a year since we got started as a formal project supported by Aalto University and #BusinessFinland with the aim of further advancing and commercialising our copper-redox battery expertise and technology. Over the past year, this journey has been incredibly exciting as we continue to create more technological development through new electrolytes or manufacturing techniques; adding to our growing list of patentable innovations. When we first began, all we had were some technical drawings, academic papers, and a small 0.5W prototype in the lab. Fast forward to this month and we are building our largest-ever 1000 W demonstrator unit, which is nearly about the maximum physical size we could build in the space we have today. Our ambitions to accelerate the transition towards renewable energy and resilient grids through our patented battery technology have increased over time. And that is why over the next few months, we would focus our efforts in establishing as a battery manufacturer based in Finland, supplying the hardware to partners and integrators for commercial, industrial, and utility-grid installations. ⚡ The batteries are able to store charge/discharge cycles of 4 to 12+ hours, thus absorbing the peak over-production of energy and creating arbitrage opportunities that will be increasingly-common as more grids shift to intermittent renewables. With the assembly and components based upon non-critical materials and highly lean production techniques, our lifetime cost over 20 years is cost-competitive with even the most established battery manufacturers on the market. We are now seeking potential funding partners, but also for pilot adoption use cases based in Finland and Nordics/Baltics. Do reach out to us to find out more, and let’s work together to build a decarbonised and sustainable future ahead 😊 #deeptech #finland #batterystorage #flowbatteries #renewables
