McKinsey & Company launched their “Women in the Workplace” survey ten years ago. Today, the latest findings from their 2024 report remind us both of the progress that has been made and the challenges that still lie ahead. Women now represent 29% of C-suite roles – up from just 17% in 2015 – and yet the growth journey is still marked by persistent barriers for many, especially at entry and management levels. The “broken rung” in the corporate ladder – or the phenomenon of women being less likely to be hired in entry-level positions – remains a significant obstacle. This is especially true for Black and Latina women who face unique challenges in advancement. Additionally, half of women under 30 “think their age is getting in the way of opportunity for them” and the data confirms this. Issues like these need to be addressed, by leaders and allies, intentionally and with empathy. Despite these challenges, I remain optimistic about the road ahead. It’s heartwarming to see an uptick in discussions about male allyship and the importance of managers offering leadership opportunities proactively. Together, we can all be champions for inclusive environments, where talent and potential are the driving forces of growth and change. In the US, women are losing executive positions. Women lost seats in 2023 for the first time since at least 2005, according to an S&P analysis of companies in its global total market index. In senior management roles under the executive level, the growth of women’s representation slowed in 2023 to the lowest rate in more than a decade. Only 42 S&P 500 CEOs are women. Why? -Gender bias: women CEOs challenge the default concept of 'leadership' which makes the job more difficult. -During a market downturn, women are judged more harshly and are likely to be dealing with more 'headwinds' (and less support). -A board which lacks gender diversity, will flip back to 'what they know' and 'what they are comfortable with' ie a male CEO. Women almost never make it to the top. Grant Thornton’s “Women in Business Report 2024” reveals that in a population of 39 million working women, only 36% are in management positions. This is termed the ‘Theory of Missing Women.’ In the corporate world, women support the company from the bottom, but very few climb up the ladder to become leaders. Numerous reasons explain why this phenomenon occurs on such a large scale. But how does this impact the overall financial sector? Here’s how: 💡 A 2022 article by Investopedia stated women struggle to succeed in the financial sector due to a lack of female role models. 💡 According to an IE University panellist, in 2022, women felt isolated and stressed due to fewer female colleagues in financial-sector jobs. These numbers point to one conclusion: 🎯 A lack of female role models in the finance sector affects every woman who enters it. Since finance has been a male-dominated industry, female representation becomes of higher importance. You can say that the lack of women in management or leadership positions is a self-perpetuating cycle. When young women don’t see other women in authority positions, they don’t see a potential path towards those positions either. This leads to more and more women discouraging themselves and fellow women from even trying for those positions. Thus, we need women in leadership positions because they set the precedence for more women to come. A study by Keys and Turner reveals that the presence of female leadership leads to better gender diversity on all levels. We don’t want female role models; we NEED them. ................................................ While companies worldwide will be publishing feel-good propaganda that celebrate International Women’s Day, the truth is that only 8% of S&P500 CEOs are women.
