“In my role as director of Alumni Relations for the C.T. Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston, I am focused on bringing content to our alumni that is timely, relatable and impactful. One of the great resources I have are a plethora of subject matter experts that can present on topics of importance to our alumni. When the Bauer College Alumni Association was looking for a faculty member to lead their next professional development session, we looked no further than Amy Vandaveer Novak. Amy is THE personal branding guru and led a fantastic session on personal branding and the ins and outs of this important skill in the digital age. I would put Amy up there with any expert when it comes to topics such as branding, sales and communication. We are blessed to have someone of Amy's caliber on the faculty at Bauer College and I look forward to collaborating with her on future alumni focused events.”

Here's how you can provide effective feedback on someone's personal brand.
Feedback is only effective if the recipient hears, relates and understands it. I think the easiest way to encourage reflection is to ask questions that lead the person to their own realization. Some that have been effective for me while coaching others are: * How do you think it (whatever 'it' is) went? * How do you see yourself? * How do you want to be perceived? * What would you do different? * What do you think is holding you back? * Are you interested in hearing my suggestions/perspective? These provide an open dialogue that provides insight into who you are giving feedback while allowing them to reflect on themselves by the questions you ask. The information gained by both parties often leads to understanding and appreciation.

Here's how you can overcome the potential challenges of rebranding yourself in late career.
Many people think they are 'stuck' in their careers and if they want to make a change must: 1. Pay for some sort of education/certification or 2. Start at the bottom. Nothing could be further from the truth. Your experience, success, and skillset are valuable in so many areas and industries. It's about reframing your expertise based on what the market needs and wants... and then positioning yourself to communicate your value. Start with having a 'cup of coffee' with yourself to get clear on what you bring to the marketplace that's valuable. Then begin connecting with people whose careers align with what you want. You can leverage your experience for new opportunities while you build a network that's connected to what you want to do.

Here's how you can professionally and constructively handle feedback you disagree with.
When hearing something we don't agree with, we often get stuck only seeing our perspective. I think it's important to recognize and validate the other person's opinion to understand how they got there. Asking questions of them help you better understand the feedback. Some that have worked effectively for me are: * What are you seeing that I don't see? * Can you provide a specific example so I have a better understanding of your viewpoint? * In order for me to fully understand, what would I do differently in this scenario? * What do you need from me in order for us to both be successful?

Strategic personal branding—And how it pays off
Business Horizons
Abstract:

Unlike companies or products, individuals possess intrinsic personal branding as a result of personality qualities, past experience and development, and communication with others—whether they know it or not. In this sense, every person already has a personal brand of some kind. The challenge is to manage that brand strategically. We offer a process for doing so, beginning with self-analysis. Then we review published sources and summarize interviews about the personal brands of 33 U.S. and European sales executives and managers, salesforce members, and professionals who sell their own services. The interviews indicate roughly equal emphasis on competence and personal qualities in creating personal brands, as well as significant interest in distinctiveness, and the respondents provide a range of examples of how personal branding pays off. This investigation leads to our basic recommendation: Follow a strategic self-branding process based on one’s values and competencies, similar to the branding methods of companies and products, but with the understanding that personal branding will change as one’s career advances.
