As leaders, we've all witnessed how the same high-stakes meeting or unexpected setback can elicit vastly different responses from our team members. This isn't just personality—it's the power of perception shaping individual realities. The truth is that much of the stress we experience as leaders isn't inherent to our challenges. It stems from our interpretation of those challenges. Do we consider a crisis an insurmountable threat or a chance to innovate? Do we see feedback as a personal attack or a springboard for improvement? I'm not advocating for toxic positivity or ignoring the very real pressures of leadership. It's about recognizing that we can choose how we frame our experiences. In my book, "Own Your Kingdom," I share a personal story about transforming my stress response by intentionally creating a pause between stimulus and reaction. By practicing mindful breathing and asking myself two key questions: "What can I realistically do to address this situation?" "What are my true thoughts and feelings once I've processed what's happening?" ... I've learned to navigate challenges with greater clarity and resilience. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗷𝘂𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀? Our mindset influences not only our decision-making but also the way we engage with our teams and how we view challenges. Cognitive distortions are patterns of negative thinking that skew our perception. How do they relate to #embodiedleadership? Here are some examples: 𝗔𝗹𝗹-𝗢𝗿-𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 Leaders often feel they must be either "perfect" or "failures." A manager may feel they’ve failed if a project doesn’t meet all targets, even though many aspects were successful. This mindset can harm team morale, as they may not celebrate the small wins. Embodied leadership teaches you to embrace nuance and be present, recognizing the space between extremes. 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Jumping to conclusions from one experience can create biases. After a challenging meeting, a leader may conclude that a certain team member is always uncooperative. This assumption can damage relationships and get in the way of collaboration. Grounded, mindful leadership helps you recognize patterns while staying open to new perspectives. 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 & 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 Assuming the worst can create unnecessary stress in decision-making. When faced with a merger or restructuring, leaders may automatically assume the worst, such as layoffs or massive upheaval. This could affect their ability to plan effectively for the future. Embodied leadership practices help you stay calm and responsive rather than reactive. In today's fast-paced, often uncertain world, many leaders face these distortions without even realizing it. Recent events like economic shifts or AI advancements are pushing us to act quickly. This increases the risk of cognitive distortions. I’ve fallen into the trap of mindreading and emotional reasoning (ie. believing negative feelings reflect the way things really are) before. Embodied leadership helps us slow down, recalibrate, and make choices from a place of grounded clarity.
