Team Mate: "Sir, What would you rate the company if you were in my place?" Me: "Probably 2/10" 😔 We were dealing with really hard times and we had to make some tough decisions which impacted our work environment. A few months went by and things only got worse and stressful. With the work environment so toxic, I went a step ahead and gave everyone an open opportunity to put their papers, if they wanted to, with no repercussions and salary paid in full. 💸 To my surprise, no one left. 🙌 I had an open house team meeting and accepted everything that had happened. I heard everyone's perspective and shared mine in return. 🗣️ That was the first time in months that we were having a candid discussion. I know of lot of people who suggested me to keep a tight lip and make decisions as I see fit. As founders, we need to realize that this is not a war that we are fighting alone. There is a reason it is called a team. We spend 8-10 hours with our colleagues; we know each other's strengths and weaknesses. 💪 Listen to your team and share your concerns, try to address them openly and honestly. One of my favorite lines from any movie: Bruce Almighty Morgan Freeman (God) is tells Jim Carrey (Bruce) after making huge messes “No matter how dirty something gets, you can always clean it up.” That sentiment of “nothing is too lost” is so true and so hopeful! "Become a Partner." Sounds like a dream when your company offers you to become a partner, doesn't it? Until you start asking the right questions. Recently, a younger cousin of mine reached out for advice. He's early in his career and he'd been grinding in a business development role at a medical travel agency for over a year. The company is old-school in its operations. The existing partners have checked out from the grind that's required to keep the business going. Meanwhile, he was underpaid, overworked, and burning out fast. We’ve all been there, right? Just as he was looking for a way out, they threw an exciting offer in front of him: become a partner in the business, with an incremental raise. Sounds great at first, but I told him to ask these questions first: - How much of an increment? - Is this raise starting now, or later? - Is there a lockdown contract? (Turns out there was.) Sometimes the lure of a title—especially “Partner”—can cloud our judgment. It can suddenly and temporarily make us feel larger than life. The real challenges would begin once the initial excitement wares off: - Burnout would still be lurking, especially if other partners start slacking off. - The lockdown contract would limit his chances of joining more innovative, meritocratic companies. - And the harsh reality: if you don’t love the industry or the work, the “partner” title won’t make the job any easier. In the end, the big question is: Do you really want to be in this industry long-term? Is this the space where you want to leave your mark, where you feel genuine passion for change? He decided to not take the offer. The tech world, where I’ve spent my entire career, is far from perfect, but one thing is certain—opportunities here are often more driven by merit, growth, and innovation. And that’s something worth considering before locking yourself into any long-term commitment. Titles will come and go, but passion and the freedom to pursue meaningful work—that’s what makes a career fulfilling in my opinion. Choose wisely, you must.

Why this and why now? Career decisions are hard if you plan on making big impact. For the last two weeks I have been talking to prospective partners in my new venture - buying a small company to run. The caliber, diversity of thought and positivity from the people I have met has been beyond expectations 😊. The big question on people's minds when talking about my career decision is why this and why now? Four big factors in my decision to target a smaller company in Australia to buy vs working for a larger company are: ✅ ~91% of companies in Australia have revenue under $50M VS just 0.5% with revenue between $50M - $500M. There are about 2 million of them. ✅ There is a succession crisis in Australia with ~ 85% of family businesses reported as having no clear succession plan yet many needing a transition. ✅ ~ Australia is the 13th largest economy in the world. Stable. Growing. Fiscally responsible. Scrappy. Investment-friendly. ✅ ~ Aussies love the underdog. Reportedly 72% of consumers prefer to buy from small businesses. I understand that. In short. This is the best opportunity set to spend my next decade pursuing. And I thought long and hard about it. The ecosystem of investors, bankers, other CEOs and advisors I have met so far are awesome. They care about growth and hard work. My farming roots will serve me well in this chapter and my 19 years of leading and learning will help me move fast. My hunt for the right company begins now and the hundreds of conversations with business owners is going to be the best part. I will be speaking with so many of you along the way. My career soared for 15 years until everything fell apart. I experienced an IPO, a Fortune 100 player acquired a technology I co-developed, and bootstrapped a successful healthcare tech firm with my salary while doing double time in corporate America. Then, I hit rock bottom when the marriage ended and separated myself from the company we built. On the outside, I looked successful. In truth, I failed my well-being. I started over at 37. The icing on the cake: the next 3 jobs were a terrible fit. I even got fired from one. Best experience ever, but my confidence was shattered. Scarier, I could not find the passion for work I used to love. I didn’t know what I wanted to do next or how I would support myself. I was given a lifeline. Thank you, Amos & Alli. I started working with entrepreneurs to help them build more valuable companies. This reignited passion. I woke up energized and excited. But this time, I was aligned. Resilient. The lessons I learned working hard the conventional way burned me out. They also helped me develop a system for creating value-led companies and fulfilled lives in this new economy. The 37-year-old in turmoil seems like a lifetime ago. But I would not trade the experiences that led to this 44-year-old’s next adventure. Silver lining: It’s all turn "aroundable" Embrace your zigs and zags because they're leading you to your most fulfilling adventure yet. If you knew how it unfolds, you’d never leap.

𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗺𝗶𝗱𝘀𝘁 𝗮 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝘆 "I see Huckleberry is going great and your writing practice too." That’s what my old boss said when I ran into them unexpectedly after a decade of zero contact. I was floored. They knew a lot about my career—even though I hadn’t seen or heard from them in years. I didn't even know they had found my LinkedIn account. The last time we crossed paths, I was on the fence about leaving my job to take a sabbatical to pursue a postgrad in International Relations. Back then, their company was floundering, while my then-side hustle—Huckleberry Media—was thriving, and I was already earning more than my salary. That’s when that boss made me the oddest offer of my career in their office: “Since you work with us, I think it’s only fair you roll your company’s clients into ours.” Sounded ok until I asked about the salary increase this merger would entail: “Oh no, your salary would stay the same - I just want you focused on our work.” So I was expected to hand over my company income, manage their clients and mine, and be paid the same. I am telling you, you can't make this madness up. Because I was ethical, I never even did my business on their hours - instead grinding away on weekends, public holidays and till the wee hours of morning on my own hustle. I resigned a month later. Their business folded some years later, and me? Well, as Elton John put it: 𝙄’𝙢 𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜, 𝙗𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙣 𝙄 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙙𝙞𝙙. Do you now see the HYMC in Huckleberry Media CompanY? Being an entrepreneur in a society steeped in envy isn’t easy. Where mentorship and collaboration could’ve lifted me up, I instead repeatedly faced crabs who thought I would stay in the barrel with them. 𝘽𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩’𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙂𝙍𝙄𝙏 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥 𝙙𝙚𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙨. For #𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸 I'll aim to share some stories about this life choice that few are brave enough to choose and fewer are strong enough to survive. And I'll leave the pseudo-entrepreneurs to their daddy's money, conferences, and 'masterclasses'.
