National Federation of the Blind Applauds U.S. Department of Labor for Proposed Rule Phasing Out Subminimum Wages Organization Urges Congress to Codify Proposal in Statute The National Federation of the Blind (NFB), the transformative advocacy organization of blind Americans, today expressed its commendation of the U.S. Department of Labor for its proposed rule aimed at phasing out the payment of subminimum wages to disabled workers under section 14(c) of the Fair Labor Standards Act. “The National Federation of the Blind has fought the payment of subminimum wages since 1942, so we wholeheartedly applaud the Department of Labor for bringing forth this proposed rule,” said Mark Riccobono, President of the National Federation of the Blind. “The antiquated and discriminatory practice of paying subminimum wages is based on false and stereotypical assumptions about the capacity of the blind and other disabled workers. It is and always has been an assault on our dignity that devalues not only our labor, but our very humanity. While we commend this regulatory proposal, we continue to urge the United States Congress to codify this change into our nation’s statutory law with no further delay, ending this shameful practice once and for all and relegating it, like other forms of discrimination, to everlasting infamy.” About the National Federation of the Blind The National Federation of the Blind (NFB), headquartered in Baltimore, defends the rights of blind people of all ages and provides information and support to families with blind children, older Americans who are losing vision, and more. Founded in 1940, the NFB is the transformative membership and advocacy organization of blind Americans with affiliates, chapters, and divisions in the fifty states, Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico. We believe in the hopes and dreams of blind people and work together to transform them into reality. Learn more about our many programs and initiatives at nfb.org.

Labor Day tributes below from Ronald Reagan in 1988 and John F Kennedy in 1963, both were their last: for Reagan as it was his final year of his presidency and for JFK, he was tragically assassinated 2 months later. Reagan: "We salute working people because they have built our land with skill, energy, and resourcefulness, transforming raw materials into a shining edifice of freedom and prosperity. On Labor Day we recognize these achievements and reflect on the meaning and dignity of work and on the values it protects and strengthens -- the values we as a Nation hold most dear. In both peacetime and time of war, American workers have always offered each other and the world their very best, affirming their liberty as individuals and as members of a team and promoting the ideals of free enterprise and democracy here and around the globe." And from John F Kennedy: "The history of the United States is in vital respects the history of labor. Free men and women, working for a better life for themselves and their children, settled a continent, built a society, and created and diffused an abundance hitherto unknown to history. Free men and women, affirming their dignity as individuals and asserting their rights as human beings, developed a philosophy of democratic liberty which holds out hope for oppressed peoples across the world. In commemorating the role of labor, we honor the most essential traditions in American life."

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - July 10, 2024 - WATCH: “Most Pro-Union President in American History” – President Biden Speaks at AFL-CIO Meeting Today, President Biden spoke at the AFL-CIO’s Executive Council meeting in Washington, DC in a showcase of his ironclad commitment in delivering for union workers. The AFL-CIO is the largest federation of unions in the United States, representing more than 12 million workers who belong to 60 unions across the country. In unscripted remarks, President Biden made his stance clear: He understands the power of unions. He believes in their ability to fuel the economy and build up the middle class. President Biden owned the title of “the most pro-union president in American history” and affirmed his intention to maintain that commitment in his second term. As AFL-CIO president Liz Shuler said, “no White House has supported workers like the Biden-Harris administration. [President Biden] believes in unions—and we believe in him.” WATCH HERE Read Excerpts From the Speech Below On growing the economy: President Biden: “We are going to build this country from the bottom up and the middle out, not the top down.” President Biden: “Beyond me, it’s all about whether or not we are going to grow the economy. Whether we are going to give working people a shot. … You’ve heard me say it a thousand times, and I am going to say it again—you built the middle class.” President Biden: “We’re the fastest growing economy in the world. That’s a fact. We’re the strongest economy in the world. But here’s what we’ve got to do: We’ve got to talk to our people. We got to talk to our people.” On his record of accomplishments: President Biden: “I said that I am going to be the most pro-union president in American history. Well guess what, I am.” President Biden: “The point is that we’re just giving people a fighting chance. And when I got elected, and even when you guys were with me going all the way back into the 70s when I was a kid, what we talked about was—the whole idea of this was to give everybody a shot. No guarantees, just a shot, an even shot. And we’ve done it with your help, your leadership.” On his plans for his second term: President Biden: “Food prices are still too high because of corporate greed. We’re in a situation where rents are too high. We need more housing. A whole range of things we’re going to get done with your help in a second term. Because that’s what we got to get done.” President Biden: “I’ve never been more optimistic about America’s chances. Not because of me. But because of what we’re doing together. I really mean it.” ###

Two day until #Juneteenth: how are you celebrating? The date printed on the Juneteenth flag shown here is June 19, 1865, the day Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. That's a full 2 1/2 lf years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation became official on January 1, 1863. Due to the scarcity of Union troops in Texas, the Emancipation Proclamation was not enforced there. After General Lee surrendered in April 1865, the Union forces were finally able to overcome the resistance. That's what enabled Granger's announcement to have real impact. The celebration of the day, though, waxed and waned, drooped in the 1900s and then revitalized in the middle with the rise of the Civil Rights movement As Texas is where it happened, it's fitting that it was the first state to recognize the day and make it a state holiday. The legislation was introduced by Al Edward and was passed through the Texas Legislature in 1979. Juneteenth and was officially made a Texas state holiday on January 1, 1980. Interestingly , it took New York State over 40 years to follow Texas' example. On June 17, 2020, New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo issued an Executive Order recognizing Juneteenth as a holiday for state employees. He also declared an attention to advance legislation for it to become an official state holiday by 2021. But that made little practical difference because on June 17, 2021 the president signed the bill that made Juneteenth into a federal holiday.
