For Immediate Release October 10, 2024 Contact: Peter Andreyev, President, New Jersey State Policemen’s Benevolent Association Topics: Healthcare, NJ State Health Benefits Plan, Price Transparency State PBA President Andreyev Statement on Horizon Advertising As the President of the New Jersey State Policemen’s Benevolent Association, I know I speak for all 32,000 of our members that we are offended Horizon Blue Cross/Blue Shield of NJ would use an actor playing a police officer to promote their open enrollment period for the State Health Benefits Plan (SHBP). First, I want assure all of our members that in no way do we endorse Horizon as a choice in carriers for their health care coverage. Second, the public and New Jersey’s taxpayers need to know that under Horizon‘s management of the State Health Benefits Plan rates increased over 50% for our members over the last 3 years - all of which is directly related to their refusal to work with the SHBP Plan Design Committee to control the costs. Horizon has complaints against them in regards to their contract compliance, and recently, one of their “national affiliates” had a $421 Million judgement levied against them for underpaying providers. This is a sign of something very troubling. Horizon is neither transparent nor interested in anything but their profits. Rather than work to provide quality health coverage at reasonable prices they insist on hiding behind claims that their operations are “corporate secrets” that can’t be disclosed. Their refusal to face public scrutiny while raking in taxpayer money makes it impossible to know what we are truly paying for our healthcare needs. We find it ironic that if Horizon was a police officer they wouldn’t be licensed simply for their lack of honesty and candor. They need to be held accountable and not use images of police officers to sell their overpriced services. We urge our members to take heed and make the right choice in carriers when it comes to open enrollment.

#MassSJCUpdate: Most counties in Massachusetts voted themselves out of corporate existence circa 1997-1999 after a major corruption scandal involving the governance of Middlesex County. But a few counties survive, and every county still has officials, like the Sheriff (now funded by the Commonwealth)-and the Register of Deeds-who collects excise taxes. Well, a dispute involving the law of county government is now in the #MassSJC as O'Donnell v. Cronin, et. al., SJC-13669, the aforementioned #MunicipalLaw dispute I flagged for stalwart friends and followers like Kristi Bodin and Ryan McRae. https://lnkd.in/eTFH9DhE O'Donnell is the Register of Deeds in Norfolk County. Cronin and the others are the Norfolk County Commissioners. And the dispute is about how Register O'Donnell justifies spending and disbursing his budget, including for technology upgrades. And it's gotten....well, nasty. There is still litigation in Norfolk Superior Court, the Register lost his legal funding....and there have been appellate proceedings on appellate proceedings.... Stay tuned. Nichey, but, I see a lot of consequences for other independently elected officials. And I wonder how this bodes for every Register of Deeds in the Commonwealth. Waves to James F. Folks, the New York State Police can do a lot, and is one of the country's finest and largest police agencies, but they are not the solution for this. This street crime is in NYC. The NYPD is a fine police agency, and the country's largest. They can enforce this, but only if we really want them to. Citizens, community leaders, and political leaders need to be consistent and we need some type of reasonable consensus and middle ground. Do we want "quality of life" crimes enforced, or not? And by how much? Combatting and reducing low level street crimes and shoplifting is not that complicated. It's important for everyone. When you stop enforcing or prosecuting, violators take advantage of that. It's a local issue and a criminal justice issue. We can discuss it reasonably and logically, and don't even need to bring politics into it. We don't need to demonize the DAs either. "Community Legal Aid celebrates Fair Housing Month by expanding efforts in Berkshire County" By Josh Landes, WAMC Northeast Public Radio "Community Legal Aid is a nonprofit that offers free legal support to low-income and older Massachusetts residents in Berkshire, Franklin, Hampden, Hampshire, and Worcester counties. To celebrate Fair Housing Month, it’s using grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to expand its legal work around housing into Berkshire County. Peter Beck – who is also the chair of the Williamstown planning board – will be the designated Community Legal Aid attorney working on fair housing out of the organization’s downtown Pittsfield office. Beck discussed the legacy of the 1968 Fair Housing Act and today’s challenges around fair housing with WAMC. BECK: It guaranteed equal access to housing regardless of your race, your national origin. It also now includes your family status, your gender, which includes gender identity and sexual orientation. But it ensures that landlords, and anyone involved in the housing market, basically in any capacity, can’t discriminate against folks who are looking to access or keep housing based on who they are. WAMC: How pervasive of a problem is that in Western Massachusetts? So, it’s pervasive in Western Massachusetts, just like it’s pervasive everywhere. So, it remains a really difficult problem and a really important problem to tackle. Sometimes the different ways in which folks discriminate or are discriminated against can change, depending on the time period, depending on the location. Sometimes disability is the category that we see the most discrimination against, or sometimes it’s race or gender. Sometimes it’s more explicit and on its face, and sometimes it’s more subtle. And sometimes folks don’t even know they’re being discriminated against, because they might be told the unit is not available when it actually is, and then someone who is different from them gets the unit when they got rejected discriminatorily."
