Ad agencies, advertising themselves. Atlas Advertising Agency, 1915. "It is an axiom among advertising agencies that the agency itself is a difficult sort of business to advertise. There seems to be little to say – expert copy-writing, expert space-buying, honesty, energy, personality – the same old story over and over again." #advertising #adsforadagencies

DiMassimo Goldstein (DiGo) is an advertising agency that is proud to do advertising and signifies this pride by using the word “advertising” when describing the advertising we do. If we are choosy about what we advertise - and we are - it is because we believe in the power of advertising to change minds and behavior. Especially the advertising we do. #advertising #agency #pride

Ad agencies, advertising themselves. Cheltenham, 1915. "Each name is known wherever advertising is discussed. Some are particularly skilled in retail selling, others in wholesale selling; some are able as writers of subtle, fine copy, others as writers of very direct copy with the wallop; some have the rare knack of making an ad speak twice to you, others can lay down an ad that is brutally strong." #advertising #adsforadagencies

I love these vintage ads. This one in particular, reminded me of David Ogilvy's famous quote, "The consumer isn't a moron; she is your wife." This ad brilliantly calls attention to the fact that "the masses" keep the lights on at your business. It doesn't insult the average man. In fact, the ad respects those who work hard in the first sentence, calling them "bread winners." "These book-shy, ingenuous millions..." That word--"ingenuous"-- a good word that might elude the "bread winners" but slaps the dickens out of those who get starry-eyed over Goethe. It means "showing innocent or childlike simplicity and candidness." An obsolete definition is "noble, honorable." Again, respect. That is what Ogilvy advocated and is as true today as it was 90 years ago. The copywriter who wrote that ad is a prime example of what great copy can do for your marketing and sales. For a great copywriter, words are tools. Just as a seasoned carpenter knows what each of his tools can do best, so a copywriter precisely chooses his words for a specific task. Fun fact: Ruthrauff & Ryan was the agency that ran John Caples' ad for the U.S. School of Music, "They Laughed When I Sat Down at the Piano, But When I Started to Play!" #marketing #advertising #sales

Ad agencies, advertising themselves. Federal Advertising Agency, 1915. "It is not easy for an agency to write ads about itself. Service is intangible and not easily described. If you invite us to an interview, and if we do not contribute ideas and information sufficient to prove our claims, then we are through." #advertising #adsforadagencies
