The structure and intentions of the programme are largely also similar . I have again, designed a six session programme, to introduce, build, develop and grow regenerative awareness, purpose , growth and community. Again featuring leading practitioner pioneers, active in systems change, in their daily lives and spheres of work. The course is once more designed to be highly accessible, practical and applicable in participants' daily life and work. This week’s guest is one of those people whose breadth and depth is an inspiration. As you are about to hear, Jenny Grettve is an author, a philosopher, a systems thinker who takes her ideas and brings them alive in the world. She’s the founder and director of @When-When, a design studio that tests and actively implements ideas and projects on systemic transformation with the goal of slowing down our speeding meta crisis. When!When! regards simplicity as a tool for innovation and create a beautiful and regenerative life for all. Those who work in and for When!When! believe that at the core of our planetary problems lie vulnerable human ponderings about why we live, what life is meant to be and how that is deeply intertwined with our economic structure. By daring to open up dialogues on economy and emotions, fear and trust, technology and using fewer resources, but also on hope and how all living things profoundly need each other, they believe they can unlock new possibilities for our shared futures. 💡 “The future belongs to those who prepare for it today.” – Malcolm X 💡 This quote resonates deeply with my experience as I returned to Kotei Roman Catholic Basic School for another session of my community engagement project. This time, I had the privilege of guiding the students through an exciting exploration of the carbon cycle – a fundamental concept in understanding how our environment works. 🌍 Why the carbon cycle? 🌱 The carbon cycle is essential to life on Earth, and by helping these young learners understand how carbon moves through the atmosphere, oceans, and living organisms, I aimed to spark their awareness of the world’s interconnected systems and how they can contribute to preserving it. From photosynthesis to fossil fuels, we delved into the science behind the air we breathe and the climate we experience. ✨ What struck me the most? The students’ enthusiasm was truly inspiring! Their questions showed a deep curiosity about how human activities impact our planet and how they can play a role in creating a sustainable future. They were eager to connect classroom learning with real-world challenges, and it was a joy to see them engage critically with these complex concepts. 🚀 Looking Ahead As I reflect on this experience, I am reminded that education is the foundation for the change we hope to see in the world. Equipping these young minds with knowledge today means empowering future leaders, innovators, and environmental stewards tomorrow. Thank you once again to the teachers and students for welcoming my team and I into their space. Here's a deeply uncomfortable truth: These industries and skills are directly linked to provoking, maintaining, and growing a culture of ceaseless, pointless, and wasteful consumption. These are skills sorely needed in the regeneration movement. The keys are knowing that what you're #marketing is genuinely regenerative. And knowing when to stop so that you're not just pursuing growth for growth's sake. She has a background in atmospheric chemistry and air quality research and has worked extensively with a wide range of air quality measurements and modelling. Currently, her research focus on air pollution mitigation including citizens science and public participation. Urban air quality can become key for involving residents in participatory planning methods for building livable environments and healthier cities. Citizen-driven environmental monitoring can generate knowledge that enrich and combine with official technologies for health and legislative purposes. This can also ignite action among citizens and make them reflect on diverse causes and effects of wicked problems as urban air quality and climate change. In the presentation I will use two examples from on-going research to highlight the possibilities of harnessing citizen science for air pollution exposure studies. The first example uses public participatory-GIS (PP-GIS) as an approach for spatial information about citizens use and experience of an urban park. What makes a nature-lover? 🌲 Ask 20 outdoor learning practitioners this simple question and you'll get this spaghetti nightmare of interconnected drivers, barriers, and looping feedbacks. Turns out "just get kids outside" oversimplifies a complex reality. I'm using systems modeling to untangle this lovely mess at the University of Glasgow, exploring how brief outdoor experiences like The John Muir Trust's Award may contribute to lasting nature connection and environmental stewardship in young people. What makes this publication even more special is that it’s a collaboration with Dr. Shelley Rap, my dearest friend from high school! After pursuing different paths—me in Disaster Management and her in Science Education Research —we’ve come together to merge our two fields into one. It’s been an incredible journey from high school classmates to co-authors on a topic we're both passionate about.
